Why has Saito been used sparingly? Is he in the dog house or are they taking baby steps with him

David Ortiz went 0-for-5 with a walk Tuesday in the loss to the Athletics.

At this point, it certainly appears as though the Red Sox are legitimately hurting themselves by batting Ortiz third. He's not getting around on quality fastballs, and he still doesn't have an extra-base hit through eight games. His at-bat in the 10th tonight, when he popped up a 2-0 pitch from a wild Brad Ziegler with two outs and the bases loaded, was simply embarrassing.

That was an unfortunate ball hit straight off home plate into the air and we really had no play there, but if Lopez does his freaking job and doesn't walk the bases loaded that's not the winning run. I don't know what his exact pitch count was, but I expected Papelbon to be back for the 12th. When I saw Lopez trot out there I knew we were done, especially with the tight zone the ump had tonight. Sigh...

On the bright side (I guess), I thought it was over the second Oki stepped out there and he actually pitched 2 solid innings.

for the record, we've had to shut down a pitcher for "arm fatigue" after every WBC. Timlin in '06 and now Dice-K
