NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed terms with free-agent closer Trevor Hoffman, the all-time saves leader with 554, the pitcher's agent told Major League Baseball website MLB.com Thursday.

Hoffman, who left the San Diego Padres after 16 seasons with them, had been expected to make a formal announcement with the Brewers but instead will wait until he has a physical examination, a club official told the website.

The 41-year-old will earn a $6 million base salary in 2009 with up to $1.5 million in incentives based on games finished.

Hoffman has been talking to various clubs since November, when the Padres took their one-year, $4 million guaranteed with an option year for the same money off the table.

"We're not getting into a bidding war with anybody over Trevor," Padres owner John Moores said.

"It'll be strange to see him in another uniform, especially for me. But it's rare that any player spends his whole career with one organization any more. I hope he has a great year."

Found it on yahoo sports, can't post links yet because I don't have enough posts. I think it's a good piece of business for Milwaukee.

Hoffman had quite the anomaly season in 2008. His strikeout rate skyrocketed and his walks went down, but his home run rate also rocketed. He'll continue to regress, but he's still a good NL pitcher.

His change-up is still sick.

Moving divisions will help minimize the hitters that have seen him. No Petco park now though.

He should be effective for them.

Nice sign, brewers lose pick?
