I'm a little surprised that theo didn't go for the pavano tweak

as a counter to the yanks picking up Jason Johnson

OMG did that really happen or was I just really enjoying mary jane

wtf is up with that?

this guy must have something

I have no idea what it is

but you don't get enough chances to become 50 games under 500

unless you have something

he's 35, his best yr was 10 -10 and he is still getting chances

and he's not even left handed

I don't see him breaking camp with the team. Maybe as a long reliever.

me neither 07

but regardless he is taking someones spot / innings to impress

I just don't see why

Cause clearly they don't like their options in-house. Hell, they were willing to pay $10 million for a 5th starter until he rejected the offer.

we understand the part about never having to much pitching

we also understand that finding a nugget in the scrap yard can make a huge difference

I just don't understand why this guy after so many chances

there are plenty of others pitchers that are in the same position that could have been signed

not sure what the $$ in that case has to do with anything

but I understand RSN can't talk much BB without going there

but if you mean andy that would be the 4th spot

I see the Yanks top 4 being Sabathia-Wang-Burnett-Joba therefore making Pettitte the 5th and there aren't many teams that pay or are willing to pay $10 million for their 5th starter

The fact that they signed Johnson the day Pettitte announced he was rejecting their offer tells me the Yanks are very worried about the 5th guy

Joba will be the 5th because of his innings cap

The Johnson signing has nothing to do with Pettitte. They Yankees would be looking to add pitching depth regardless of whether or not Pettitte signs. And there are still plenty of good pitching options out there for the #4 spot if Andy doesn't sign, so I don't think the Yankees are worried yet.

maybe in sept but not in april, joba still has innings issues

no news there

I guess that's somewhat reasonable

but I don't see any connection

It's been pretty obvious for a while andy wasn't taking the 10 mill

I'm sure they are concern about the 5th spot we all are

but there are way to many options in between andy and johnson

Which is why I'm baffled as to why they signed Johnson. I don't want to hear about pitching depth cause if you have to throw out Johnson for a start, it's cause you don't have any depth.

now you are baffled ?

that's what I 've been asking about the whole time

why this guy

I wasn't questioning we needed more pitching

cause you can never have enough

yes we all understand why the sox traded for him a couple of yrs ago

but what does that have to do with what I'm asking

Posted
if what you're asking is why didn't they any of the several better alternatives to Johnson, then I really don't know, I'd ask that as well if I didn't root for the Yankees to fail so badly

that, but the dodgers too

what does this guy have that got him enough chances to become 50 games under 500

that's a lot of chances without ever showing an upside

What' date=' you didn't know that the Yankees acquired Aaron Small specifically for those two months in late 2005? They knew that would happen. Same thing with Giese last year, they saw what he was capable of from the time he was in low-A ball. f*** emergencies, the Yankees are just [i']smart[/i]. Smart enough to know that a career f***up like Aaron Small was always hiding a superior talent that only the magic pinstripes could release. They're a step ahead of you and me, and five steps ahead of the rest of baseball. Maybe Selig should sanction their crystal balls.

Are you kidding? I'm pretty sure you are. You are aware that Small was a spring training invite who struggled at Columbus most of the season until about June or July, when he seriously contemplated retirement. I believe his wife talked him out of it, he improved at AAA and came up and made a spot start. Just so hapens he went 10-1.

It wasn't discussed much, it was just assumed that Andy would be the #5, but when you take into account Joba's innings limit (which is why he should be in the bullpen) and the fact that the #1 (C.C.) is a lefty, as is Andy you don't really want to stack your 2 lefties up one after the other in the rotation.

I would bet he's kidding.

I've never been more serious about anything in my life.

We do have some concerns about our #5 starter. Thats obvious. And last yr we thought we had depth oing about 8 or 9 deep in the rotation when you consider the hot shot rookies. Well, the two most durable AAA guys went down with injuries, then our most durable starter went down after the two kids who started the yr in the rotation went down. It was amazing the amount of pitching injuries we had so adding depth isnt too bad. I just dont think adding useless depth helps.

One thing that concerns me is the innings caps. Joba threw 100IP last yr (and his career max is 120IP), Hughes threw somewhere in the 110-120 range (while his career max is 146IP). That means that both will be on innings caps, both likely in the range of 150IP. They said they would get creative to reach those caps. By creative, I think they'll be skipping a few starts. If you assume that they average 6IP per start, thats 25 starts to get to the cap. That leaves 7 starts per turn up for grabs. If you assume the trio of Sabathia/Burnett/Wang miss 6 starts all yr (which is conservative to say the least) that menas our 6th starter will start 20 games in 09. This is why we need PEttitte

dude's got eye cancer

According to the New York Post, Jason Johnson has been diagnosed with cancer of the retina in his right eye.

"I went to the eye doctor to get a new pair of contacts and they found it,'' said Johnson, who is in Yankees camp on a minor league deal. "They sent me to the Wills Eye Institute in Philly. It's supposed to be the best in the world. Only 2,000 people a year get it. They put a radiation plaque on my eye for four days. They told me it has a 98 percent success rate. I can't pitch outside for two weeks. I can see but not real well.'' The 35-year-old right-hander also has diabetes.
