Red Sox acquire Rangers' Wes Littleton

Red Sox acquired RHP Wes Littleton from the Rangers for two players to be named or cash.

A nice pickup for the Red Sox. Littleton hasn't been all that effective since his rookie season in 2006, but he has a 3.69 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 102 1/3 innings as a major leaguer. Outside of Arlington, he has a 2.70 ERA in 53 1/3 innings. When Littleton's sinker is working, he's an outstanding middle reliever. Still, he didn't show the same stuff last season as he did earlier in his career.

His career 4.84 K/9 and 3.25 BB/9 are not impressive. But I guess he's a middle relief filler guy.

If you have Masterson for long innings, that's actually a very nice well-balanced pen.

Do the Sox normally carry 12 pitchers? I count 7 BP arms, plus 5 SP( unless masterson is in the rotation:dunno:)

 

 

I still think one of MDC/Ramirez/Masterson could be gone in a trade.

12 pitchers is pretty standard, since that leaves 4 position players on the bench (C, IF, OF, UTIL).

I beg to differ, since IMHO, these are stepping stones to a much bigger trade, probably for a Catcher.

But then who's your 5? I'd be much more comfortable with Masterson than Buchholz or Bowden (from the get go).

This is a pure depth move, nothing more. You don't trade Masterson just because you have Littleton.

I never said Masterson would be moved, i said it's probably a stepping stone towards a bigger trade, or can you show me where it says "Masterson will be moved", no offense meant of course.

It's just that in my mind, Justin Masterson is nearly untouchable due to his current value to the Red Sox as an organization, not the market, but the Red Sox and their pitching staff the way it is currently constructed.
