It's a totally benign move IMO. The A's will get a bit better but not good enough to make a difference, they will trade him in a few months and continue their cycle of not holding onto good players for very long. Unless Beane thinks that adding a bat like this will give him a shot at the WS...

Very odd move until I can see what players are going back to Colorado....Oakland won't pay him after next season anyway.

Very, very odd.

I have a feeling it won't be the first time he's traded this offseason.

Interesting theory. I guess I could see Beane flipping him for more prospects instead of trading prospects for prospects straight up. And yeah, any news on who they gave up?

Maybe he gets moved again this off season. But they might sell him for a Kings ransom at the Trade Deadline. Which is probably where they will get better in return for him.

The Oakland A’s have agreed in principle to acquiring Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday for three players, according to a source familiar with those discussions.

The source believed the A’s are sending closer Huston Street, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and starting pitcher Greg Smith to the Rockies.

Not a bad haul for the Rox. They get a Street to replace Fuentes. Gomez for the OF. I don't know that much about Smith.

Tavaras could be closer to being moved now, with Gonzalez to replace him.

What a moronic trade for the A's.

Also, I need that link bosoxnation07, I have another message board I post that I'm sure would love to know about this. ;)

Not really if they plane on capitalizing on his value at the TDL. When some contender is sure to be in need of a power bat for the stretch run.

Are they really going to get a return package identical to what they just gave up, considering they'd be dealing him as a rental, and Holliday would become a free agent after the season?

I sure as hell wouldn't pay that kind of package for 3 months of Holliday.

But aren't they supposed to be trying to sign Furcal and Giambi?

I've read rumors about it on mlbtraderumors.com, so maybe they're trying to make a go-for-it next season?

Posted

Why Street is on his way out anyways. Gonzalez is good but fairly unprooven, and smith was 7-16 with a 4.16 ERA.

Ya I think it's reasonable to think they can get more then that at the Deadline, from a team in need of hitting. It will depend if Beane wants quanity or quality.

Posted
I have read too the A's actually have money to soend. They may be making a push now instead of later. And if it doesn't pan out, Beane will collect prospects like usual.
Posted

If their making a playoff push that explains it a bit better (though it still seems like a waste of time with the Angels in their division).

Street may have been on his way out, but he's still a quality closer. Gonzalez is a top tier prospect. Smith didn't do so well last season but IIRC the A's have (or had) high hopes for him.

I think they gave away too much if they just plan on flipping somewhere else in July.

LA overachieved their pythag by 12 games, so I wouldn't put dismantling them out of the question.

Specially if they can't re-sign Teixeira, which may be what the A's are banking on.

W/o Teixeira in their lineup, the angels aren't a powerhouse on offense, and could be dethroned by an improved A's team.

very shrewd move by Beane, but Oakland's park could seriously put a dent in the free agent haul Holliday wouldve gotten

He'll probably be moved by the deadline anyway

You really think the As + Holliday are better than the Angels - Teixeira?

By all means no, sir.

But please refer to my earlier statement of the rumors that link the A's to Jason Giambi and Rafael Furcal.

IF they were to acquire those three players, i think they'd have a shot to go for it.

You don't think the race gets closer?

Angels could lose KRod, too.

I'm pretty sure the Angels have been grooming Jose Arredondo for that closer spot. I don't think losing K-Rod's a huge deal.

So who pitches the 8th for them?

Removing a pitcher the caliber of KRod hurts their bullpen no matter how you slice it...and if Weaver/Santana/Saunders regress they will have big problems.

Well yeah it hurts it, but its not a crippling enough loss to where they immediately fall back to the rest of the pack in the AL West. I think the Angels could afford losing K-Rod more than they could afford losing Teixiera.

My line of thinking is, the Angels have always had a deep bullpen, and they keep drawing guys out of nowhere. I mean, who had heard of Jose Arredondo before last season? Cheap argument, I know.

Yea, the race gets closer, like the Angels win the divison by 12 instead of 21

Scot Shields...

Arredondo steps in as the closer and someone will step up for the 7th just as the Angels always seem to do
