I have been hearing the sox in the mix for CC through a lot of the sources. Granted, they are throwing in all the large market teams, which sounds like a good way to generate non-news. But it is an interesting question. Do the sox chase CC? Or even more, do the sox chase any pitching this offseason?

I think the entire plan centers around Beckett. Beckett is entering the last yr of his contract, although the sox do own an option for 2010. If the sox sign CC, then the sox set a precedent that would make Beckett a wee bit snippy. And with Beckett likely entering FA as a 29 yr old, he's gonna be getting a megadeal. That being said, the sox have another ace in Lester and a damn good pitcher in DiceK. Therefore, I think the sox will kick the tires, but I dont think they will commit the 22 or so mil a yr to CC. Then again, if they did and the sox had a rotation of Beckett, CC, Lester, DiceK, and Buchholz/Bowden/Masterson/Wake, then they'd be even nastier

Id personally rather AJ Burnett. he seems like the type of guy who would really benefit from the Sox track record of "babying" pitchers

Out of Sheets, CC, and Burnett, Burnett is my first choice.

I think you have to go for him if the price is right. can't have too much pitching.

If the price is right? He's line to match or exceed Johan's contract with the Mets

I do see the Sox making a hard run at Burnett though

Sox have very little control over that. If they don't make a big offer, someone else will.

The Red Sox should deffinitly look into the pitching market. Outside of needing a catcher the Red Sox don't have a lot of needs throughout the roster and they could expect more young impact players coming up through the system.

I wouldn't say no to Sabathia but he may not be my first choice. Although I think he has logged a lot of innings and could be an injury risk it is a risk the Sox can afford with Buchholz and Bowden still knocking on the door should the need arise. I'd rather go after AJ Burnett.

So? If you think his arm will hold up you still have to go for it. If his arm doesn't fall off he's probably worth every big of a huge contract.

I'm not against this, but Burnett isn't going to be that much cheaper. He turned down a contract worth 8 digits a year. Given that CC is more likely to be a quality pitcher in the AL East over the first 2/3 of any contract I don't think AJ is the value investment many people seem to be assuming he is.

I respectfully disagree. Lowell is getting old and he's on the decline, IMO. I know Ortiz is hurt, but I feel similarly about him. I also feel he is upset about the Manny thing and may not get over it with management- him wearing that shirt the other night speaks volumes.

The decline of these two leaves us a very powerless lineup. We need another solid bat that can play 1st/3rd/DH, IMO. I feel thatnot upgrading the heart of our order will leave us pretty impotent.

Were I running the Sox , I would make a run at CC for obvious reaons. That being said...the Sox have more pressing needs. I would like to see the Sox sign Teixiera and move Youks to 3rd. The Sox could then send Lowell/Bowden plus cash to the Rangers for Teagarden. The Sox then need to decide wether or not to make Masterson their 5th starter or leave him in the pen to set-up. Ideally the Sox would like a rotation of Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, Buchholz/Masterson. I think Clay will bounce back next year and be very good...he has too much talent to disappear. Uness the Sox can sign a lights-out set-up guy, I would keep Masterson in the pen. If Masteron stays in the pen the Sox need to go out and get another SP. Considering cost and durabiliy issues I would sign Derek Lowe.

My 2009 Red Sox

CF Ellsbury or Crisp(Ellsbury might be centerpiece of deal for Peavy)

2B Pedroia

DH Ortiz

1B Teixiera

3B Youkilis

RF Drew

LF Bay

C Teagarden

SS Lowrie

SP Beckett

SP Lester

SP Dice-K

SP Lowe

SP Buchholz

CL Papelbon

RHS Masteron

LHS Okajima

RP DelCarmen

RP Lopez

RP Wakefield?

That team would be THE heavy favorite to win it all.

To be honest, I wouldn't be against this if we were playing Baseball Mogul here but there is NWIH that this team is ditching Mike Lowell in the offseason. Just not gonna happen -- there's no way you'd get decent value for him, and it'd be a poor showing of loyalty to the guy when he's leaving his heart and soul on the field for you besides being a pretty competent all-around corner infielder in his own right.

Our roster is pretty set. If we pick up a new hitter who isn't a catcher it'll be a swing for someone like Carlos Guillen who could hit well and fill multiple roles in the event someone goes down (or Lowell needs to take his time coming back), so that you wouldn't (necessarily) be dislodging any one player from his job..

Not really sure Guillen would be up for a super sub role.

How would you opt to describe what he did for the Tigers this year then?
