Lowell on 15-day DL; Pauley recalled

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 13, 2008 03:41 PM

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to an oblique injury that he suffered during last night's game.

Righthander pitcher David Pauley has been recalled from Pawtucket to take Lowell's spot on the roster.

DAMMIT! You know he hated to have to do it. Heal soon Mikey!

More on Lowell from the Globe's Amalie Benjamin in today's Red Sox notebook:

"I took those two swings my last at-bat, the first one I felt like a little grab on my side, the second one I felt something a lot more significant," said Lowell, who then left the game. "The last pitch I kind of panicked, I didn't know what to do. I didn't think I could swing. I was kind of hoping he'd just flop a curveball or something. I've never had this happen to me before. It's just frustrating." ...

After the game, Lowell could barely stand, his eyes and face wrinkled with what seemed like pain. He was deeply concerned about what today's MRI would bring.

"I can't really stand up really straight," he said. "I feel like keeping bent over feels a lot more comfortable. Getting up out of a chair isn't the greatest thing. I just hope I sleep good tonight."

Asked if he thought the disabled list would be a possibility, Lowell said, "I hope tomorrow I feel better. I'm just, I'm not sure.

"I'm kind of - I wouldn't say nervous about it - but I feel like I'm in uncharted waters. I'd like to avoid [the DL]."

The trainers, Lowell said, have told him to take it slowly, believing that rest will help his already ailing hip. Lowell has been suffering from a strained right hip flexor since the end of June, and spent time earlier this season on the disabled list with a sprained left thumb. But Lowell said that, with the injection he got a week ago, his hip had been improving.

"I don't see them as two totally different things, it's just too much of a coincidence," he said, of the hip and the oblique.

"Those two swings were weird. I tried to kind of bend over and grab it, and see if something would go away. But, I don't know, it's kind of getting progressively worse."

Is it possible that we might see Lars Anderson get a cuppa as a result of this? I mean, in terms of raw talent he'd clearly be the best option sinde we really don't have anyone who can play a major league iB or 3B at Pawtucket, and Anderson looks like he's adjusted to AA just fine and is killing the baseball -- I imagine he could be adequate at the big league level on an emergency basis right now. If we're resigning ourselves to full-time Caseyness at 1B as it is, why not go with a young option who's swinging a great stick up in Maine instead?

I'm pretty sure the Sox would prefer not to do it all things being equal, but remember that Masterson went from Portland to Boston to Pawtucket this year even though he wasn't on the 40-man at the start of the procedure, so it's something they're willing to do if they see a hole.

keyword there is raw

Not that raw. He's got quite a nice little OBP down in Portland and for his age is an exceedingly polished hitter. but point taken.

If we don't promote Lars another thing that could happen is that the Sox could make a deal with the Royals for Ryan Shealy -- who would at least be a warm body to back up Casey and at best could provide enough RH power to make up for the loss of Lowell.

I really doubt they'd call up Lars from AA. How about Bailey or Carter? I know Carter was converted to a OF, but can he not play 1B anymore?

Casey should fill the role just fine. I'd rather give Carter a shot at taking the starting spot while Lowell is gone and if not Carter then just let Bailey back up Carter.

Carter's hurt, and Bailey's the Charlie Zink of offense. That's the only reason I'm looking to AA or outside the org.

I really think Lars could work out. It's not like we'd be calling on Jon Still of Lancaster to be our starting catcher -- Anderson has an impeccable prospect pedigree and he's an incredibly talented hitter who's put up very advanced rate stats at an extremely young age and has transitioned quickly at each level. And don't underestimate Theo's ability to think outside the box here -- it's not even close to a majority chance but it could happen.

The sox have been pretty good in knowing when a player is ready or not. Take a look at Ells, Pedroia and the rest. Lars is just getting the swing of things in AA. You want to throw him into the fire of a pennant race while skipping him a level?

Why not? The MLE of his work in Portland, admittedly a small sample but it's what he's done consistently at every level for a year and a half now, puts him in the top-10 among qualified MLB 1B. There are no suitable internal options. He's probably got the most advanced plate approach in the whole system. The only hurdle is getting him on the 40-man.

Craig Hansen' date=' Cla Meredith?[/quote']

Hansen pitched 9 innings in AA before getting the call. Meredith was given one chance and then shipped away, hastily at that. This comp isn't apples and oranges, it's apples and typewriters.

Which is no hurdle at all if we don't plan to hold onto Eric Hull after this year.

It'll be a tough loss, but I think they can weather it. To add, I was already of the opinion he should get a taste in Sept when rosters expand. What's a couple of weeks?
