huh? VA, these arent the rays.

This is a good move for the DBacks. Dunn OPS's >.900 regulalry and should be a nice power push for the West.

Jeez, I'm retarded. Thanks jacko!

Speaking of the Rays, didn't realize Carl Crawford went on the DL. Figures, we don't see them until 9/8, he kills us.

Agree, nice pick up for the D-backs!

Response to Manny. Interesting move. I guess they do have the lowest record among playoff contenders, not including LA who wouldn't be interested (kind of surprised they didn't block it though--couldn't they have blocked it?).

Not only was Dunn sneaking through due to low interest, but LA has nowhere for him. If they blocked him and Cinci said take him, they'd be f***ed.

One, I don't think anyone is f***ed when they can add Adam Dunn and just forget to tell Juan Pierre when the bus to the airport leaves. Two, Cinci is extremely unlikely to just let him go when he's 1.5 month from being a FA that nets them 2 top-40 draft picks. It's strange that LA let him through.

clearly, Coletti feels he doesnt want 6 outfielders. you can't run a team by grabbing players for the sole purpose of f***ing over a team you're chasing

Well, I agree with that statement, so saying they'd be "f***ed" was a bit too much on my part. I suppose what I meant to say that it would only worsen the already existing log jam they have in OF. For whatever reason, the Dodgers seem to have a very hard time sitting Juan Pierre down as it is... Ethier should probably be playing instead of him anyway.

I guess I'm also surprised now that I realize that power, aside from Manny, is an issue with the Dodgers' lineup. They'd be getting quite a bit of it with an addition like Dunn.

What I should have said was, "Due to the Dodgers incompetency with using the OFs they have, adding Adam Dunn would only cause more problems for them."

I agree that it would help the Dodgers, though I'm not sure that their FO would realize that.

I dont see why everyone shits on Juan Pierre so much anyway. yea, he doesnt have any power whatsoever but its not as if they play in a hitter's ballpark where everyone else clubs them out anyway. he has tremendous base-stealing ability and isnt a terrible hitter.

We just did it. Or, do you really think this team thought it had a serious shot of trading for a guy who has a limited NTC with Boston on the list?

The Dodgers were stupid for letting their opponent get better.

Actually, this happens quite often.

When the Astros placed Clemens on waivers, with the intent of trading him NY, the Sox claimed him for the sole purpose of screwing with the Yankees.

The Yankees claimed Jose Canseco from the Devil Rays with the sole purpose of screwing the Redsox, who were looking for a right handed power bat. Keep in mind that they had claimed Glenallen Hill off waivers like a week prior, so Cansecos role with the Yankees was basically to keep the bench warm as Hill already filled their need for a righty bat to DH and come off the bench (Hill had a much better season).

Instead of Canseco, the Redsox ended up with Dante Bichette.

Weren't the Jays the ones looking for the right handed power bat?

I think getting swept by Cleveland at home pretty much sealed the Jays' season

My mistake on not being clear enough.

And Cashman understands why Canseco feels his time with the Yankees was so uncomfortable. Cashman placed the claim trying to block Canseco from going to the Toronto Blue Jays, and he was surprised when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays did not withdraw Canseco from waivers. Canseco played only part time for the Yankees. ''To be healthy and not playing was eating me up inside,'' Canseco told The Register, a California newspaper.

The Yankees could not have blocked Boston from getting Canseco, nor the Blue Jays since they had a better record at the time they claimed him. They were more likely claiming him to block him from Oakland, as they had a better record than the Yankees at the time. Let me see if I can find an article.

Of course they could block him. The Red Sox wanted to make a trade for him after he had cleared waivers. They didn't want his full salary. In a case like that a team with a better record can block him by claiming him before he clears waivers. Toronto waived him and the yankees claimed him to keep him from the Sox.

Just a clarification, the Devil Rays, not the Blue Jays, waived him.

It was unclear if the Yankees actually wanted Canseco or were more interested in blocking Oakland from adding a needed right-handed bat. Canseco was placed on waivers Thursday and Yankees GM Brian Cashman put in a claim, one day before Oakland acquired Mike Stanley.

The only other AL teams the Yankees could block were Chicago and Seattle, which both have entrenched designated hitters. And NL teams likely had no interest.

He's a dreadful defender, who has no ability to hit with even gap power.

That makes him pretty useless. He gets his fair share of CS, so he doesn't add a whole lot in the SB category.

No one wanted to pick up his $1 million in salary plus incentives. Teams were waiting for him to clear waivers before making a deal.

So Cashman had to weigh the pluses and minuses of claiming Canseco. If Cashman passed on Canseco, then there was a chance a team with a better record could land him or that he could clear waivers and be traded to a Yankee rival, such as Toronto. If that happened, Steinbrenner presumably would have been apoplectic.
