...that make me even more pissed off that Schilling conned the Red Sox into giving him $8 million this offseason.

What a joke.

Well, this is with the assumption that Curt knew his arm was hurting as much as it was. I would assume that the majority of his damage was done prior and hence was the reason for him needing a DL stint and some time rehabbing. But I think the final straw was in his warmups to get ready for the spring. Regardless, as much as I'd like to think Curt is a fat lout, suckling off the sox teat, I dont think he is the kind of guy who can take money without being able to give any sort of performance.

So, to recap, this board:

Thinks it's OK to call Keith Foulke mediocre

Thinks it's OK to boo Mark Bellhorn

Thinks it's blasphemy to knock Schilling

Posted

If you read his blog, Schilling thought he'd be fine after an offseason's worth of rest. He knew his shoulder was in trouble but I don't think he thought it'd blow up on him at the start of the season. It sounds like he thought he could nurse it along much like he did for most of the second half of '07.

The other thing to bear in mind is that we wouldn't have spent the money we saved on Schilling on another SP anyway. If Schilling was a no-go not one of us would have blinked at using Clay Buchholz as our 5th starter in April of 2008.

Generalization. I, for one, appreciate what Foulke, Bellhorn and Schilling did-I cheer whenever any of the '04 squad (Terry Adams included!) comes back to Fenway. Schill shouldn't get a free pass though.

Why wouldn't they have spent the $8 million on another starter?

A guy like Kyle Lohse would be a huge help right now, for sure. He could have been had for that money.

Well, heres my 2 cents. Shilling seems like a decent guy so I can't imagine that he's sitting around eating 8 mil$ in Bon Bons. He'll probably do a lot of Red Sox charity work for years to come and in time everyone will forget about this season and only remember the bloody sock anyway.

Come on, get real.

Cast your mind back to how you would have thought of things in February. Do you honestly think that you could have convinced any of us, yourself included, that Buchholz was an inferior option to Lohse?

Fair point, but they also went and signed Colon as insurance. I know, I know, minor league deal, but had they known Schilling wasn't an option for 2008 in this past offseason it wouldn't have shocked me to see them go after a SP.

Who?

Santana would have cost us Lester Ellsbury, and Masterson or Lowrie -- our season goes much worse without those youngsters even with Jacoby's slump.

Bedard was in the AL East and we don't have the high-minors power bats that would have lured him away from Baltimore.

And do you really think the Guardians, one game away from the Series last year, would have dealt Sabbathia in the offseason for any price -- especially to the team that kept them out??!

Other than that the only SP worth pursuing was Carlos Silva -- and you see how well he's working for Seattle!

Dojji has this one. The off season pitching market was about as bad as I had ever seen it. The best FA option was a #5 starter who got 11 mil a yr. Lohse turned into an NL gem, but he had been brutal in the AL to that point. The only option would have been a trade for Santana. The one thing I will disagree with Dojji on is that the package the sox had a shot at using, with Ellsbury and not Lester heading it, would have been in the sox best interest. The Lester one would have been a disaster. But imagine a top 4 of Beckett, Santana, Lester, DiceK. Yowza.

I wasn't defending Schilling. Read the rest of my post. :D

Schilling, like Manny, has done many great things in a Red Sox uniform, and has received all due praise. Likewise, he has said, or done, maybe stupid things and deserves appropriate criticism.

I've never seen Schilling mail it in' date=' BigPapiEnFuego. Have you?[/quote']

Oh and Manny did? Seriously that's speculation amongst all you people. He didn't run 100 miles an hour on some ground balls. Boo f***ing hoo. He's been known to have knee/hamstring problems, and i don't blame him if he doesn't want to run 100 percent for fear something could happen. Besides if he mailed it in, i don't think he would of hit .347 in July and had 6 RBI's in his 5 final games with the red sox.

I know I know lol I just used that one part lol. I know someone else would seriously say "2007" and try to use it to make schilling seem better

I've defended Manny through it all. The final straw was sitting out of the Fri 7/25 game v Yankee's due to a "knee" injury. That's when I knew he was REALLY ready to get out of Boston. It didn't help that he hired Satan as his manager who was behind a lot of this stuff. (Yes, Satan also represents Dice-K and Tek et al)

I wish Manny well and thank him for all he did for the Red Sox. He is greatly missed!

Manny's numbers in LA could very well have been the same here if the Sox hung onto him. This would have just been another bump in the road like 2005, and everyone would have been laughing the day afterwards. Manny would have been more relaxed, he would have been motivated, and he would have produced.
