This is all well and good but it is predicated on the fact that Varitek is a good catcher.

I have no problem at all with Tek and hope the Sox keep him. It's difficult to watch his batting slump, the worst of his career.

faking injuries

also, on a side note, say what you want about the bullpen or come up with any excuses you want but the 'pen pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings against a team trying to avoid getting swept at home. ill raise a glass to that

Faking injuries? Are you kidding me?

I missed the game due to work. Someone give me a quick recap...

I take it Buchholz looked pretty good? Masterson's performance sure sounds encouraging. It'll be nice to have another option to go to in the pen now that he's out there.

Buchholz was OK...7 Ks in 5.1 is good but too many baserunners.

He's still having trouble with the FB.

you see the difference between a 93mph fastball and a 96mph fastball?

bucholz had his, which was a foot high and outside deposited in the bleachers

delcarmen threw his by the same hitter

bucholz was supposed to have better velocity than this, playing tagg with penthouse centerfolds would certainly explain his lack of ahh stamina and therefore velocity

alright fine, he walks into the clubhouse yesterday complaining he needs to rest a knee injury he's been battling through for a week when neither the manager or the medical staff heard him complain about anything. what leads you to believe its a legit injury?

He's got 20 million reasons for next season to play as much as he can this season. Whether or not he's faking it, it doesn't help his case to be sitting down. Besides, hasn't he had issues with the knee before? I would tend to say that he was sucking it up as long as he could before he felt he needed to say something to someone.

im more along the line of thinking that he doesnt want the Sox to pick up his option. Boras has been in his ear and if the option gets picked up, Boras doesnt see a dime.

if the Sox allow Manny to walk, he'd probably get the security of a 3-4 year deal worth between $15-20 mil a year. if you think thats crazy for a 37 year old slugger, remember we live in a world where Andruw Jones just got signed for $18 mil a year.

regardless of what shenanigans he continues to pull this year, the amount of stupid GMs in baseball arent lacking

Would it have been a good move...considering we would have lost Masterson and Lowrie' date=' and would be paying Dye to platoon with one of our best hitters this season?[/quote']

I thought the reason we did not have Dye was we had to give both Justin and Jed and we said no. I would happily exchanged the prospects we gave up for Gagne for Dye. That probably would not have got it done - I know.

I assume one of Dye/Drew would have moved to center if we would have dealt Coco in off-season. In any case - we could have done lot better than Gagne. Because of last year's experience - I am not that enthusiastic in this year's trading deadline.

If Tek would like to be a manager - it may be a wise idea for him to call Kapler right now and get some tips on how to make a smooth transition.

This is crazy talk. The recent contracts of aging / declining sluggers should be the bar we measure against here, not Andruw Jones. Remember, Jones signed that 2 year deal for his age 31 and 32 seasons, and he did it while providing middle of the order power at a premium defensive position. He had, just prior to the contract, what could easily be explained as an off-year, not a pretty clear trend of decline, like Manny has.

Manny is pretty much a DH at this point. The only reason we don't DH him is because we have another pretty good DH. After finishing 4th in the MVP for Oakland in '06 as a 38 year old, the big offer Frank Thomas got was from Toronto, for all of $5.56M. Add a little because he can occaisionally play LF, add a little because he didn't have significant missed time previously like Big Hurt did. Where do you end up? Probably around $10-12M. He can make two years pay if he gets his option picked up.
