Nice deal for both here. Holliday is probably a bargin at that price. On the other hand, given Holliday's ML experience, thats pretty good money.

If his agent weren't Boras, I'd be saying "hometown discount." Holliday is worth a whole lot for his near-MVP 2007 season, and I can't believe that he'd've gotten under $10 million in arb. If he did anything similar in 2008, he might've been looking at $15-20 million in final-year arb.

After making $4.4 million last season, Holliday gets $9.5 million this year and $13.5 million in 2009.

The only ways this helps Holliday are:

1) Insurance against an injury: he just made three times his career earnings to date; and

2) It helps his team for two years and helps his reputation for when he does go to free agency.

Tulowitzki Extension Close

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki are nearing a record six-year, $30MM deal. This beats Grady Sizemore's $23.45MM contract as the largest for a player with less than two years of service time. The deal also has a seventh-year option.

Renck says Tulo would be a Rockie through 2014; it seems like he is counting the option year in that statement. Seems like a wise move by Colorado; the Guardians certainly aren't regretting Sizemore's contract. It's nice to have cost certainty with your star players.

Nice to see the Rox taking a little risk by signing there young stars/core of the team, to long term deals. Looks like that FO has them headed in the right direction finally.

The NL West was a joke just a couple years ago. Now they have probably the best young teams in baseball with AZ, COL, and SD. The Dodgers are more of a veteran club but could very well be in the thick of the division race. The only sorry ass team is SF.
