Report: Juan Gonzalez Signs With Yankees?

El Vocero, one of the bigger newspapers in Puerto Rico, is reporting that the Yankees signed Juan Gonzalez to a two-year, $2MM deal. This report definitely makes me raise an eyebrow, for three reasons:

* In both 2006 and 2005, odd reports surfaced about teams being interested in Gonzalez, only to have the teams publically deny interest a day or two later.

* It seems absurd to give Gonzalez two years or $2MM when he hasn't played in the Majors since that one at-bat in 2005. He's 38 currently.

* The Yankees would seem the last team with room for another DH.

This was a moron move on the Yankees part. 2 mil is nothing to them and its a good low risk/high reward move, but why 2 years?

I read the same thing, BUT, a poster on another site is fluent in spanish and the original article made reference to a day similar to april fools. Apparently, Dec 28th is similar to our April 1. And since this is the only paper reporting it, it seems like that is the case.

Otherwise, I agree. WTF about the 2 yrs?

Yeah, doesn't seem to be coming from anywhere else. Isn't juan done anyways?

And about Juan being a juicer... was he ever officially connected to steroids or HGH?

Officially? No.

Juan Gonzalez was allegedly introduced to steroids along with Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez by Jose Canseco when he moved to Texas. Their names were all mentioned in Juiced. All three had permanent improvements in power hitting from that point onwards.

The more that comes out regarding steroid use, the more Jose Canseco appears to have been telling the whole truth...however, his words in Juiced were not testimony under oath.

Thanks for your post regarding Gonzo's relationship with the players you mentioned...this is along the lines of what I had read years ago that lead me to label him a juicer in an earlier post.
