The Mitchell report has reportedly been sent to the commissioner's office (agreement stated that the commissioner must recieve it at least 24 hours prior to the public release), and appearantly it will be released Thursday. Reportedly will name between 60-80 names.

Mike & The Mad Dog spent a lot of time on this today and had some pretty interesting stuff, for those of us in the NY area or with YES access who happened to catch some of it. Certainly it will be a HOT topic for a while following it's release, so I figured I would start a thread now so we can speculate and discuss prior to and following the release.

I expect it to be pretty revealinv and earth-shattering. Looking forward to Thursday.

Yeah, the most significant inmormant they had for this investigation was Radomsky (sp), who was a clubhouse assistant with the Mets for over a decade. Per the terms of his plea agreement for his own criminal case for distributing steroids he had to cooperate and assist with the Mitchell investigation.

In 2003 when they had the survey drug testing, about 100 players tested positive. The report is only expected to name between 60 and 80 throughout the whole duration of the "Steroid era." It just point out that while yes, there will be lots of names named, there are a lot of wrongdoers who won; be named here. This, from what i've heard the past day or so, wasn't the most well-done investigation. MLB spent $16 mil to just victimaze a select group of players who they were able to target, offering practically no background or reasons for why certain players were on the list. A few people who were asked to be interviewed stated that during the interview they were repeatedly asked to speculate, or guess, on which players they THINK may have been using, making it clear the the motive here was for Mitchell to just get names out there. Rather than hastily looking to expose x number of players, you would think that after so much time there would be more to this thing. I guess we just have to wait and see come tomorrow to find out what really went down with these millions over the past almost 2 years. I think, however, that if all we get from this report is between 60 and 80 names, and nothing more delving into background or explanations that the investigation was a failure, and only doen to present what looks like a strong effort to crack down and find out what went on.

Have any punishments been set out for those who are named? I mean of course if they're retired, not much that you can do. But for those still playing, fines? Suspensions? Banned?

I think regardless of who took them, some punishment should be made, maybe take away a record if it was set while at the time of using steroids, or a heavy fine, maybe a good long suspension too. I know SOTK (or I'm sure it was him) once said I'm a baseball Puritan, and I am, I hate to see anyone ruin the game, regardless of the player. Therefore these 60-80 if still playing, need to be dealt with accordingly.

honestly, I'm surprised we haven't seen 5-10 guys come out and say they used in the past few days. most who are named to that report must know they're on it and I'd figure most would try and protect their image as much as possible by being more forthcoming about it

Because like Bonds, they're gonna try and deny it for as long as humanly possible. You know I gotta give respect for Giambi who actually admitted and apologized to it. He manned up to his wrong doing, I just wish everyone else would man up, admit it, they f***ed up. The longer they deny it, the worse it's going to get.

The guy who has looked the worst in all this, besides Bonds, is Rafael Palmeiro because he so emphatically denied using and the guy who looked best is Jason Giambi because he was forthcoming about it. There's a lesson there that clearly not many ballplayers have learned

The Yankees immediately looked into voiding Giambi's contract, even though outside the allegedly secret grand jury testimony Giambi didn't quite admit to anything--he just apologized for what he'd done without exactly specifying for what he was apologizing.

I'd say that ballplayers learned their lesson: Deny everything. :dunno:

I dont think at this point any of the named players will be punished. I can't say for sure why, but I do remember hearing some sort of explanation for it. When i'm not feeling like s*** i'll try to remember. But for now, as far as I know, no punishments will be handed down. I don't disagree with that either. None of the players failed a drug test administered by the league during a season, and therefore shouldn't be punished. I agree with everyone's reasopning of why they should be punished, but I dont think they will, or should be. There's still plenty of others who aren't named that would be getting away with it.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason they never failed a test was because at the time they were using HGH, which is memory serves me correctly, wasn't, and still isn't tested for. Why they don't test for it is something I'll never get. And whether or not they failed the test, if the fact comes back that they used, they need to be dealt with. If they take action now, it just may prevent others from trying in the future. And they need to start doing routine and random testing in baseball.

Apparently the Mitchell Report is to be released at a press conference tomorrow a 2pm Eastern, via Wikipedia so not sure how accurate that is unless it's been confirmed by MLB or some other realiable source.

George Mitchell's report on drugs in baseball will finger MVPs and All-Stars, The Associated Press learned Wednesday.

It'd be interesting to see Miguel Tejada named just one day after being traded, as it could be taken as a sign the Orioles knew it was coming. The report, set to be released at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, will not address amphetamines. It will call for a beefed-up testing program conducted by an outside agency. Dec. 12 - 7:33 pm et

Let's name every single player in baseball that is good and over 5'10", 200 lbs! And let's name some twice!

fielder was hittin em out of tiger stadium.....when he was 12

dont get me wrong

no name on this list will surprise me or hurt my feelings

i suspect em all and i dont blame any of em either

its money and its about performance and how a guy gets there is none of my business as far as im concerned....

ya i know the straight guys suffer because of it....just look in the nfl locker rooms for an example of a ******** policy that is being abused and ignored..

howie long was the 3rd highest recruit on our high school team

he ended up in villanova as a 225 lb freshman

he graduated at 275 and when he was in his prime played at 290...

now he walks around at a trim 240? id say.....sure you can add 50 lbs of lean on a body over time but how do you maintain that weight over a season that starts in july and ends in january for the better teams?...you cant unless....lots of milk shakes right?

steve doig is a neighbor of mine in gloucester...played at unh and had a decent career with detroit and finished playing on the pats special teams....his nfl playing weight at linebacker was at 250? on the inside and at the end he was at maybe 265....

i would say hes at under 225 today?

the long term effects arent known exactly

we have seen short term effects like lyle alzado and the other maniac in oakland who also died...caminitti?? puckett??

who knows

i do know i never can fault a guy for making himself and his family more secure and god help me if i was in their shoes

C'mon man, it's more likely that David Ortiz would be namd than A-Rod. Let's just wait and see....another 16 hours.

When I heard about Mitchell's reccomendations into a new testing policy, I was satisfied. At least there's gonna be more to this thing than just exploitng names of players, distributors, etc. MLB and the owners & executives are gonna probably get it in this thing. Glad to see that Mitchell is doing what Bud actually asked for, rather than what Bud probably wanted.

The real "crime" in this will be that a lot of users DON'T get named while some do. I've stated a number of times that I believe the % of players using PEDs is extremely high...at least 50%. Just because a player is not on the list will not erase my suspicions. Unfortunately I'm afraid those who used but didn't get caught are going to be erroneously vindicated.

T'was the Night Before Mitchell

T’was the night before Mitchell, when all through the league

Not a player was sleeping; the world would soon see

The names were all waiting, those tested and not

And come early morning, some names would be caught

The owners all fretted, played cool, but were stressed

When visions of empty seats would mean rain outs at best

The fans would now realize that under the cap

Was a God’s honest cheater, a hero now trapped

When out of the courtroom, once Barry the batter

Did spring from the bench and receive such a clatter

But now in each city, no fan could remain

Convinced that their team had played clean in the game

The names on the list of the new-written doc

Gave the sorrow of winter to a summertime flop

When what to his wondering ears should arrive

But a bevy of names Selig wished he could hide

Then a little old man who Bud once had hired

Presented the outcome that should get him fired

More cutting than Peavy’s, as heavy as Webb’s

The names were all shouted, Bud wished he was dead

“Now Barry! Now Raffy! Now Big Mac and Sosa!

“Your names will not be held alone any longer!”

“Come Clemens? Come Gagne? Big Papi and Wagner?

“The gasp of your fans will drown out all the laughter!”

As loose change in sofas compiles through the year

The scornful remarks Barry’s haters held dear

Were high as the sky, but suddenly silent

As he now had friends in the “cheater” department

And then with a chuckle, the laughter re-grew

They pointed at Selig, “We’re laughing at YOU!”

He wondered aloud how they could be scoffing

“Because you’re as shifty as loose rabbit droppings!”

He was dressed all in red-face, but he knew the truth

For he had a hand in the falling of Ruth

And Aaron’s miraculous, jaw-slacking record

Was now in the shadow of steroids forever

His eyes, how they widened! His brow, what a furrow!

His cheeks were as red as a drunk John Turturro

His tense little mouth in a frown just as always

A look on his face like he’d pinched one off…sideways

The truth had come out, he had known all along

He’d known of the steroids, he’d seen them grow strong

Now Mitchell, the hired man, brought forth all the knowledge

Of wood bats whose stats were once reserved for college (ping!)

The press was all there…yes they, too, were witness

To players whose bodies defied normal fitness

Though Mitchell did not seek to slander their name

Reporters were part of the mess all the same

He spoke many words, that Mitchell did he

Erasing the fans’ Barry-Bonds-scapegoat-glee

The problem was bigger, much bigger it seemed

Than most of the hypocrite fans once believed

He sprang from his pulpit, no podium here

He’d spoken the truth of a game once revered

The heard him exclaim of the glove, bat, and ball

“These used to be sacred, now shame on you all!”

The report will only list players who have paid for and received shipments of steroids, not all players who have failed drug tests

So now just because a player iso ne that list, doesn't mean they actually "took" the steroids. Now common sense is that most likely they did, but now it's just "paid for and recieved." That sorta ruins the whole hype of the report.

I've been up since 4am and started watching Mike and Mike in the Morning on EPSN and they're already going at the "blame game" over who's fault it is to allow the roids go on for as long as they did. Personally, I think it's everyone's fault who had knowledge of the using. Every player, every training, every clubhouse official, EVERYONE who had some knowledge of this should have spoken out. But instead they let it go to this. No one person should be held responsible for it.

what about some personal responsibility here?

if a guy is juicing wouldnt he be the one to blame?

if a guy juices why is it the general managers fault?

why hold the owner accountable for what the 3rd basemen does at home?

if we're blaming the entire organization why not blame the fans as well?

when we as fans see 2nd basemen hit 43 hrs in 112 games are we really that naive to think that the guy suddenly got this power from the weight room and extra batting practice?

(hello matty williams)...

what about luis gonzales?..58hrs and i s*** bigger than he is...

nothing remotely close before or after the 58 hr year.

nobody was calling him out in 01 when he was mashing....

mark mcguire had hair growing out of his palms in 98 when he broke the record...

he had zits on his eyelids for gods sake and yet the entire nation embraced him as if he were legit as they did sosa.....

by the time bonds came around the nation hated him anyways and were already numbed by the power surges.

most of baseball simply ignored his 73hr year.

essentially its the guys who were usings fault and nobody else

if youre looking for accomplices then ya,everyone, including me you and the record breaking crowds who came back to the ballparks after the disastrous strike in 94 are all guilty of looking the other way

the only people i feel bad for here are the children who still idolize some of these guys and maybe disenchanted with their heroes when all is said and done here.

C'mon, considering his dramatic change in size, who's to say that Alex Rodriguez could liegitimately be on this list while maintaining that David Ortiz isn't? At least be fair about it. You wanna point fingers at the star players on the rival team at least entertain the possibility that you may have some players of your own listed, either that or just shut your mouth.

As for the Mike & Mike thing, which I too have been stuck on all morning, it seems as if ccording to the Bergen Record that it will be a pretty earth-shattering day in the Bronx. So it may be fair to think that A-Rod may possibly be on this list, especially considering that A-Rod had worked out at the home gym of Jose Canseco back in '98-ish. Clemens or Pettitte maybe? I wouldn't be shocked to see LaTroy Hawkins (not that he's a prominent Yankee) named, maybe some of the guys from the 90's championship teams. I'm anxiously awaiting 2p.m. And while no current Mets on the 40 man roster are named, considering their biggest informant is Kirk Radomsky, i'm sure there'll be some former Mets named. IDK why, but one name that for some reason has made an appearance in my head is maybe Roberto Alomar? I can see a few guys on that '02 Mets roster being named for sure, as well as going back throughout the duration of the 90's. At this point I can't even speculate anymore. All that we know is that today is going to be a historic day in Baseball, so everyone brace yourselves. While there was no due process in the investigation, for whatever reason the players named are named. Let's just be prepared..at this point I think it best that nobody be surprised by what is revealed throughout the duration of the day.

Please don't name Manny, please don't name Manny, thats all I ask of the baseball God's. Seriously I can't imgaine how I would feel if either Big Papi or Manny's names were on this list.
