Delmon Young to the Twins

The Twins are close to landing Delmon Young from the Devil Rays in a six-player deal that would send Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Juan Rincon to Tampa Bay.

 

The Twins would also pick up Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie, the Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III reports. Unless the Twins see Young as an option in center, he'd probably play left, with Jason Kubel DHing against right-handers. Nick Punto could replace Bartlett, leaving Harris to take over at second until Alexi Casilla is ready. The Rays would be opening up room in the outfield for Rocco Baldelli or Elijah Dukes. Jonny Gomes' chances of sticking around would also seem to increase.

I like it. TB has a plethora of outfielders, so why not swing one of them in order to get a young stud pitcher and a couple other solid pieces?

That's exactly what came to mind when I saw this. But if the deal goes through as reported, it doesn't really tip their hand as to what they'll do with Santana.

Great trade for Tampa Bay, nabbing a quality starter in Garza and a reliable setup man in Rincon. Wheeler and Rincon at the back of the bullpen would sure give Tampa fans more assurance

It appears also that the Rays are closing in on a deal with Troy Percival.

I wouldn't call Rincon reliable with a 5+ ERA and 1.5+ WHIP.

Not suprrised to see the Rays part ways with him, and in a good deal that makes sense on both sides. Like everyone else, i'm intrigued to see where/how Delmon is used in their OF, and how it affects Santana bids. I guess only time will tell.

He was also pretty bad in his last month or so in 2006. I don't see a positive trend.

The Twins rather have sent top relief prospect Eduardo Morlan, even better for the Rays. The 21-year-old had a 3.10 ERA and a 99/20 K/BB ratio in 69 2/3 innings at Single-A Fort Myers and Double-A New Britain last season. This team isnt far away from challenging to enter the top 3 of the East. If anything for 2007, they'll leap frog Baltimore
