According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox and Curt Schilling are nearing the completion of a new incentive-laden one-year contract.

Schilling told the Herald that talks, "gathered momentum and if they continued to progress like they did (yesterday) something could potentially get done." No word on money, but Schilling was looking for a $13 million extension prior to last season. Philadelphia, St. Louis and Houston had all shown initial interest in the free agent veteran this offseason.

"Talks with the Red Sox are moving. Theo and I have spoken multiple times daily over the past week and given the current situation I am feeling very confident that we will be able to finalize a 1 year contract to allow us a chance to finish our career as members of the Red Sox organization. There are some things to iron out and details that must be finalized for both sides but barring something unforseen or outrageously odd happening I feel very comfortable that I will finish my career here."-- 11.5.07, Curt Schilling, 38Pitches.com, late in the evening

Oh hell yeah.

Beckett

Schilling

Dice-K

Lester

Buchholz

Wake...

I like to juxtapose this information with the Pettitte press release from earlier in the day. Makes me smile.

That is fantastic! I think Schilling is a classy guy and would have hated to see him leave. I'll never forget the bloody sock performance in 2004! It must be great having him on the team for the young pitchers. Who knows, maybe if Farrell gets a managers position after the 2008 season, Schilling could become a pitching coach.

Farrell as Manager and Schilling as a Pitching Coach. f***in' nasty.

Great news, get it done! I heard on WEEI that it's a $6mil base with lots of incentives. I think shill has already said he doesn't want to coach once he's done

So with Schilling seemingly back with the Sox, the rotation would look like:

Beckett

Schilling

Dice-K

Lester

Buchholz

Wakefield

yup, I put 6 names because I strongly believe the Sox should go with a 6 man rotation next season as it would benefit just about every member of that rotation with the exception of maybe Beckett. More rest would perhaps prevent another dead arm period for Schilling. Dice-K always pitches better with an extra day of rest. Wakefield's shoulder would hold up better with more rest. Lester is still recovering from cancer and is still a young arm and Buchholz would benefit from pitching a limited amount of innings.

But if they stick with a 5 man rotation, Wakefield would look awfully good as a long reliever/spot starter which would then mean either Tavarez or Snyder would have to go

Disagree. I want Beckett pitching as often as possible.

I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him at ESPN or Fox in 2009.
