Red Sox exercise options on Wakefield, Tavarez

According to ESPNews, the Red Sox have exercised options on Tim Wakefield ($4 million) and Julian Tavarez ($3.85 million).

 

Both should have been easy calls. Wakefield will occupy a rotation spot at a bargain price once again. Tavarez would be necessary protection if the club opted to go with Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz in the 2008 rotation. If the team instead re-signs Curt Schilling or brings in another veteran, Tavarez should return a decent prospect in a trade.

No brainers. Wakefield is a bargain. Tavarez is a fairly valuable piece, he's versatile. Spot starter, middle/long reliever, crossing guard, genie.

I have to admit that I was not a huge Tavarez fan until he showed a value in the clubhouse. He's one of those guys (like in '04) who you hate when he's on someone else's team, but you love him when he's on yours. Spot relief, and a positive dugout influence at a bargain. I'd say that's a good deal.

Wow. The doc fails at reading comprehension. The article says "decent" prospect.

 

And if Joel Piniero can get a multi year deal in the NL it shows how much pitching is needed there.

Decent prospect for Tavarez? The Cardinals got Pineiro for nothing essentially, two AAAA guys who will never see Fenway unless they buy a ticket. Tavarez would return the same thing. He's a 4 inning starter who cannot get out of his own way and he walks too many guys to be a trusted middle reliever.
