Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox

Date: September 5th, 2007

Time: 7:05 PM ET

Location: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

Pitching Matchup: Shaun Marcum (12-5, 3.75 ERA) vs. Curt Schilling (8-6, 4.02 ERA)

On Tuesday night at Fenway, Jacoby Ellsbury watched from the on-deck circle as Coco Crisp flew out to the right-field warning track. He returned to the home dugout, his opportunity to hit a double and complete the cycle dashed (Crisp's tracer was the final out of the eighth, and Boston didn't bat again).

Not a bad night, nonetheless. The Red Sox rookie has been a smash hit since his recall on Sept. 1, going 8-for-12 with a walk, two home runs and five RBIs. More importantly, he has had a significant hand in each of Boston's four consecutive victories, helping it take command in the American League East race after a four-game slide last week.

On Wednesday night, the Red Sox will start Curt Schilling against Blue Jays right-hander Shaun Marcum, needing a win to complete the sweep. Given his recent success, it is Ellsbury who will likely draw the most attention for another night.

That is, if Boston can make room for him in the outfield again.

"I leave that up to them," Ellsbury said after his 3-for-3 night on Tuesday. "I'm just happy to ... be put in the lineup, no matter where I'm playing, or where I bat."

Manny Ramirez's left oblique injury, sustained on Aug. 28, has created an opening in left. Ellsbury has run with it, supplementing his torrid hitting with dazzling glove-work.

But the rookie understands the nature of the situation.

"We need Manny hopefully to be back as soon as possible," Ellsbury said.

In the meantime, Ellsbury has given fans a glimpse of what could be a future that is even brighter than expected. In 436 Minor League at-bats between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket this year, Ellsbury hit two home runs, one as recently as Aug. 27.

In 30 at-bats in the Majors, Ellsbury has swatted a pair of homers into the Red Sox bullpen -- both in the last three games. There is reason to believe that real change is afoot in his line-drive power stroke.

"Pretty much the whole Minor League season, up to this last month, I was kind of using my arms and using my speed to get hits," Ellsbury said. "But this past month, I just worked on using my legs. No matter how strong you are, if you're just using your upper body, you're not going to drive the ball. And that's what I worked on, just using my legs."

"I knew my capabilities," he said. "I had the potential to drive the ball and I'm starting to put it together."

That was f***ing retarded. Just forfeit the AB next time so I don't waste part of my life on the Alex Cora experience.
