I was browsing the boston.com Red Sox interactive poll, and I stumbled upon a question that asked, "Should the Red Sox play more small ball?" (bunts, steal bases, manufacturing runs, etc.) I thought this should be an overwhelmingly no answer. The Red Sox have hated small ball since 2003, and the results?

2006 - 6th in runs scored

2005 - 1st in runs scored

2004 - 1st in runs scored

2003 - 1st in runs scored

The poll voted yes, and not by a small margin. 87.3% disregarded statistics, common sense, and logic. The other 12.7% voted that the Red Sox should continue to use the strategy since 2003.

Do these people actually watch the game?

Well, a lot of teams have stupid fans, however, we should be smarter now since we are leading the AL in team BA.

Pedroia's bunt yesterday against Lerew was dumb.

Coco's today wasn't so dumb, only because at this point I think Crisp can hit the ball further if he bunts it.

More importantly, we lead in OBP, and are in the top at SLG%.

(Batting average is not small ball)

I agree with the Sox using small ball, but only in the right situations. Bunting in a blowout or when a pitcher is having trouble is just stupid. Getting the critical steal or bunt in a close game and against a tough pitcher, can be a great move. Some small ball is alright. I love having guys steal, hit and runs, etc. Too much bunting is just stupid though.

I don't like small ball, but I also don't like being just strictly station to station. I like that they are taking advantage of Lugo's speed, and I like the occasional coco crisp bunt, but, that said the way the Sox are going to score a lot of runs is by being patient. See a lot of pitches, swing at strikes, the big hits will come and before you know it, we are into the bullpen. The Detroit series comes to mind, when we faced Nate Robertson, a very solid veteran pitcher, he had 100 pitches thrown in the 5th inning. That is a hell of a job, that is how the Sox are gonna score, not bunting guys over and that crap.
