WTF' date=' how was that an earned run for wake? An error throw let caused him to score, how is that an earned run?[/quote']

Because he put the guy on base. Once a guy is put on base by a pitcher, if they score it's an earned run for that pitcher.

NVM. On Gameday, they originally had it as an earned run, but just changed it...

And Kyahbean, thats not true, as this wasn't an earned run...

The rule is that if an error causes a run to score, then it isn't earned. I think an error with 2 outs automatically makes any runs after that (in the rest of the inning) unearned.

Hm. How does it actually work' date=' then? :dunno:[/quote']

you judge every base that a player advances based upon the error and then consider if they would have scored after the fact. Wells was on 2nd and went to steal 3rd. If the error was made, but Thomas hit a homerun the next pitch, then both runs would be earned as without the error, Wells would have been on 3rd for the homerun. But since, without the error, Wells would have been stranded at 3rd, the run is unearned.

Well, that makes more sense. It's definitely more fair. Thanks. :)

not true either. Depends on the error. A throwing error is a difference of a base. An error where a runner would have been out would make every subsequent run unearned. For example.

1. There are 2 outs and Lugo hits a chopper to SS that gets bobbled. Lugo reaches. Youks hits a homerun the next pitch. BOTH runs are unearned.

2. There are 2 outs, Lugo singles. He goes to steal second and Zaun throws the ball into CF. Lugo goes to 3rd. Youkilis hits a homerun. BOTH runs are EARNED.

The difference is that without the error in the first instance the inning is over. In the second instance, Lugo is on 2nd.

Now for an advanced instance.

Lugo is on 1st, 1 out. He goes to steal second and the catcher throws it into CF. Lugo moves to 3rd. Youkilis hits a sac fly and then Papi K's. That run is UNEARNED because without the error, Lugo is on 2nd when youkilis hits the flyball and doesnt score. Then Papi K's and the inning would have ended without a run scoring.

Jacksonian' date=' nice explanation. Thats exactly it. Mike Lowell already has 6 errors...[/quote']

that is how I learn best. In my realm they are called vignettes. But you can just call it learning by example.

I had to read that a few times and then consult Wikipedia to get it...but I think I understand now. That was a pretty good explanation! Thanks! :)
