Well, it looks like they will wait to see which Schilling will show up. Just for the sake of argument, remember the stats here.

10-3 3.60ERA .255BAA 6.7IP per start 1.09WHIP pre AS

5-4 4.58ERA .310BAA 6.3IP per start 1.42WHIP post AS

he faded something fierce last yr and it wasnt him losing the zone or anything. He was laid into the last half. This is a prudent measure.

Wise decision on the Sox part...IMO, if Schilling can prove to be even a competent third or fourth starter (next year's third or fourth), they should give him a new one-year deal to finish out his career in Boston. I'm not much for "owing" a player anything, but for what he did for this squad in '04, we should let him finish up here if that's what he wants.

I think its a good idea and one that I thought they would do. Like I said before if Schilling comes out and pitches well in 07( or good enough for the number 3 or 4 spot) then sign him. But its not worth signing him now and he goes out and sucks ass( which I find it hard to believe) then your stuck with him chewing up money and a rotation spot.

This is no disrespect to him, what he did in 04 was awesome but its 07 now and he has to proove himself again.

wells has always been falling out of his uniform. Schilling is usually a little heavy round the gut, but he isnt usually THAT heavy. And last yr was the thinnest I have seen the guy since his ARI days. The sox decision is looking smarter and smarter by the day.

Agreed, this is a business, and if Schilling can't pitch as well as he did before, then they will fill his shot with someone else. I like Schilling, always have, but I like how the Sox are playing there cards on this one...

I agree with the consensus posted so far. I just want to add that if the Sox are not in the hunt before the deadline, expect Shilling to be traded to someone in the hunt.

To just suddenly show up in camp and announce he wants an extension seems almost amateurish from a business perspective. In situations like this, using an agent isn't a bad thing, and maybe he could have got his extensive before he showed up to camp looking a little heavy.

Schilling will test FA after the season.

Curt Schilling told WEEI on Thursday he plans to become a free agent following the season because the Red Sox are not willing to negotiate a contract extension with him now or during the season.

The Red Sox front office has hinted that they want to see how the 40-year-old pitches this year before committing more money to him and Schilling was reportedly told of their official stance Wednesday. There was speculation that he had been discussing a one-year extension worth $13 million. Like Schilling's retirement plans, this too could change. However, Schilling doesn't want to negotiate during the season.

its a catch 22. If he plays well' date=' he likely could get a multiyr deal elsewhere. If he plays poorly the sox wont want him.[/quote']

He only wants a one year deal dickwad.

If he pitches well the Sox pay up. If not he can test the waters.

This whole thing doesn't make any sense to me at all. Firstly, Schilling can't realisticly expect any contract extension with a) how he finished last year B) his age gettin up there, and c) the shape he is currently in. Also, how does negotiating a contract that shouldn't involve too much specific language a la Drew distract from pitching? I mean a 1 year, 13 million dollar deal shouldn't be too hard to hammer out in a few days (all-star break could come in handy here). Schilling's going public with this isn't needed at all either. I mean maybe it's just his nature but he's acting like we've mistreated him in some way and is now threatening to go to another team because of it.

The Sox FO handled this very well.

1. Schilling has said he only wants to pitch one year.

2. With his age and health concerns, as well as the performance in the second half last year, it would not have been a smart decision to invest $13-15 million in Curt Schilling unless we saw what he could bring to the table this year.

3. Schilling has only been good for 25% of the last two years.

4. If Schilling pitches well to command a one year deal worth $15-17 million next year, the Sox will pony up the cash and give it to him.

5. If he sucks, cut bait.

And finally, if they didn't sign Pedro to an extension before a season started why would they do it for Schilling?

You know who Schilling idolizes right? The same guy who comes back every single yr under the guise of a false retirement to millions of dollars from every team in baseball. Schilling is a media whore, a fat ass, and a jerk. But he is a competitor and that will never be taken away from him. And until his competitive fire is extinguished or forcefully put out by no team wanting him, he will pitch past 2008. This yr he will have a dropoff as last yr his peripherals took a serious nosedive. But he could still be an ace in the NL and if Arizona is so intent on signing RJ to restore some butts in seats, they will with big Schill too. I think Schilling could get a 3yr 30 mil deal out of teams this offseason even if he sucks this yr. He'd be supid to pass that kinda money up especially when he came up kinda late and didnt hit the big money until he was in ARI.

but the sox are doing the right thing here. His usefulness as an ALE pitcher is coming to a close and its better to be holding a spot open for Lester or Buchholz next yr (I still think they are rushing him) than to have one filled with a declining windbag.
