First of all, I am a big Buckner fan. He was my favorite player during his time in LA.

With that said, I just finished watching the last 10 minutes of the Buckner game on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2BzhTUcRgI ) and I had a couple of observations.

1) Vin Scully is the best announcer in baseball. Period.

2) Buckner went 0-for-5 in the game, each time with runners on base. This was just the icing on the cake.

3) After all of the other mistakes that inning, including the wild pitch, Buckner's error was the straw that broke the camel's back. It's a shame it got blamed on him. Kind of reminds me of the Bartman fiasco, and how Cubs fans forget the mistakes their team made prior to Bartman's catch.

4) That ball actually did have some weird spin on it. You can see the last hop kind of skips low instead of coming up. If Buckner takes it on his knee, he probably doesn't make the play to first in time. Buckner's knees probably don't allow for him to charge the ball hard.

5) I thought the pitcher was slow getting off the mound and Buckner was trying to decide whether or not he was going to have to try to race Mookie to the bag.

If that had happened, it would have been a close play at first, Buckner had bad knees.

6) It's a shame that Buckner's kids were getting beat up at school, and he had to move to Idaho. Got driven out of town. It shows where Boston's priorities lie.

Thats going to happen wherever people are passionate about their sports. One could almost feel proud that their city supports their team that much. Is it better then not caring about the incident?

I don't blame Buckner though. Mookie was fast, and no one was really covering 1st.

But to say an entire city sucks based on an incident is assinine.

EDIT: Im not old enough to know, but to the elders, if you felt some serious anger towards Buckner, has he been forgiven now?

Buckner's plight would not have been as bad as it was if he had just stood up like a man and said that he messed up. He called it a minor miscalculation and made the ridiculous statement that it was not the key play of the WS and on and on without admitting that he messed up. That's what incurred the wrath of many. Also, lets not forget that he set all kinds of records for LOB in that WS. He had more to express regret about than just that play at 1B.

He also hit .380 in september and drove in over 100 runs that year. Without him, Boston doesn't get to the WS.

Amazing 700; I actually agree with Linda on that post. As everyone knows by now I was not a Red Sox fan in 1986, but to blame Buckner for that fiasco is just pure BS. The Red Sox were just one out away from winning the WS that year and you would have thought Stanley and that other guy who preceded him (you know the chokeup from Texas), Shiraldi could have gotten at least one damn out. Then there was a seventh game the next day. The Red Sox had a chance to win that game, too, not to mention the fact they took the first two at Shea and went back home for game three with a 2-0 Series lead. I saw Buckner play many times out here in LA and the guy always gave his all. I know most Red Sox fans have now forgiven Buckner, but it was bush to blame it all on him in the first place.

Yeah exactly. Let's beat a dead horse.

I'm trying to talk baseball with you guys. Give me a break.

It so happens that I like Buckner from his L.A. days, and I wanted to hear if you all were still bitter about that incident.

It's not beating a dead horse unless it's been discussed here numerous times, and by my calculatins it hasn't. Sore subject, maybe, but not a dead horse.

Speaking of sore subjects, why are Mr. Crunchy and Budlight asking if I'm into double penetration? By the way, I think guys who like anal are closet fags.

Anyway, you guys are not my type. I'd rather settle for someone like seabeachfred who knows how to stick up for me in this thread. How's it going, Fred? I hear you've been working out.

Alright...its a little weird that this topic got brought up after 20 years...but hey, its a RedSox topic, this is a RedSox board, I can go with it...

I'll tell you what is retarded, however...the fact that anyone made any kind of comment that even remotely justified ANYTHING regarding Buckner's kids.

Thats going to happen wherever people are passionate about their sports. One could almost feel proud that their city supports their team that much. Is it better then not caring about the incident?

And...I don't really know how to quote multiple things in the same post when they're on two different pages in the thread...so here's a700's quote "He should have taught them to fight back or he should have sent them to a better private school."

Tell me you two aren't f***ing serious right now...I'm reaaaaaaaally hoping you're not. It's hard to read emotion on post walls, but if you're for real, you've gotta have your heads examined. I love the Sox as much as either of you do...and there's just no excuse for that. I respect both of you on this board and enjoy hearing your opinions on things...but this guys? You're way off base. Check yourself.

700, somehow I missed your post. Yes I read it and agree with you. Buckner could have been more contrite about the miss and admit that it WAS a key play in the game. I think that reaction set the fans off against him at the home opener in '87 when he was literally booed off the field. What was amazing, still, was that I actually found something to agree with Linda about. That has never happened before, although I do wonder why she brought that subject up in the first place. After all that was over 20 years ago and we have all moved on.

Linda, one thing I have over you is that I don't like it when people pile on a certain person because it rustles by sense of fair play. I wouldn't do to you what your friends over there did to James Perez, Irish Fan, FDS, Billaker and myself. You made a good post and I said I agreed with most of what you said. I really don't know why brought it up in the first place since Red Sox fans have put that out of their mind and moved on. Remember, the Sox won a World Series just three seasons back. None of us want to remember Buckner or that Series. Hell, I wasn't even a Red Sox fan then and means nothing to me. Be honest. Did you start that thread to agitate some people?

The 20 year anniversary of the Buckner game was in October, it was discussed, rehashed ad nauseam, that's all I'm saying.

Had he made the play, the game still would have been tied. Pitching lost that game and Buckner shouldn't have been in the game at that point.

People blaming him was pathetic.

So it can be viewed as trollish, for you to start the thread, considering some of your other posts in the past. Just sayin'

First, Linda makes a useless post that is meant to aggravate. But for some reason, I personally think you like it, but have to respond, dragging up more s*** that doesn't belong here. This after, you've stated time and time again, that you're done with this crap and you're putting them on your ignore list. When you've been advised and told to stop this. You keep dragging it out. You feel compelled to respond to anything that's posted, whether it's relevant, you have any incite on the subject, or post even belongs at this site. I'm asking the mod's to ban you and this Linda ( he, she , it ). Anyone that agrees feel free to psot a response.

I don't reqally care about his kids or that he had to leave NY. I don't condone the behavior that drove him and his family from New England, but he such a f***ing weanie whiner that never was accountable for his horrendous World Series that I could give a s***. It wasn't just the error. I wanted to shoot him like a lame horse before the error, because of the LOBs which were record setting.

It wasn't just the error. It was the record-setting LOBs. One or two hits in those situations and game 6 would have been a blow out without going to extra innings.

Sox Fan, I agreed with her for crying out loud. I'm not trying to incite anything. I thought her post was pretty good and I said I agreed with a lot of the things she said. I want to drag nothing out. I find it surprising that when I praise her I'm getting accused of raising hell. I also said I thought this topic was discussed before and didn't need to be even brought up. Believe me, I want what went on before to be buried and be done with. There was absolutely no intent on my part to do anything of what you are accusing me of. That is all behind me. Take that to the bank.

Pitching and bad managing lost that game, not Buckner. However, like 700 said, Buckner isn't excused from his record setting LOB debacle. Yes, he got hit way too hard with the fallout and it shouldn't have happened. I also agree with what you said in that he was a key piece to our presence in the world series that year anyway. The Buckner subject never agitated me. It was a terrible moment in Sox history, but I feel that looking back on it, the blame should be placed elsewhere for losing THAT game. Buckner sucked at the plate during the world series, but losing game 6 wasn't his fault.

I agree 100%.

Buckner was the scape goat and what everyone remembers, it's unfortunate. I was afraid the same thing was going to happen to Wake after game 7, 2003 ALCS. But instead it was Grady leaving Petey in too long, but that one makes more sense, should have stuck w/ Embree, Timlin Williamson.....

Well I responded to the Buckner post and got accused of trying to stir the pot which is actually ridiculous. I have a suggestion. Just delete the thread once and for all and be done with it. We need no more hard feelings on this board especially when nothing of the sort is intended.
