then how can you explain a .360 OBP with a .280BA in over 400 MLB at bats on a team where he was obviously the guy they wanted to go after in the lineup? Luck is something I could see if the guy walked 15 times in 100 PA's, but 56BB's in 460ABs doesnt happen by accident. Power, maybe, batting average, definitely, but walks in a lineup where he would be considered the easy out, is something that does not fly in my book.

Random variation. If he can continue to do that, then sure, discipline is a skill I'll attribute to him. Until he shows it consistently, not just one year, then I'll believe the trends the larger sample show.

There's nor evidence to say that Melky replicates last year this year. If he does, then you have something to hang your hat on.
