HOUSTON -- Free-agent slugger Carlos Lee has agreed to terms on a six-year contract with the Houston Astros, according to a Houston television station.

KRIV-TV, citing Major League Baseball sources, reported Friday morning that the outfielder had agreed to a six-year contract worth an unspecified amount of money and would be flying to Houston from Panama on Friday to sign the contract.

Houston general manager Tim Purpura was not immediately available for comment. The Astros have scheduled a 4 CT press conference, during which they are expected to announce the signing.

Lee, who was paid $8 million in 2006, is a career .286 hitter in eight Major League seasons, with 221 home runs and 772 RBIs. He has driven in 80 or more runs each of the last eight seasons and has scored 100 or more runs four times. Since the 2003 season, Lee is tied for 12th in the Major Leagues with 131 home runs and ranks ninth with 442 RBIs.

Lee's combined statistics with the Brewers and Rangers last season included a .300 batting average, 37 homers and 116 RBIs.

Lee's agent, Adam Katz, met with Astros owner Drayton McLane and Purpura on Wednesday.

Another one bites the dust . :dunno:

EDIT: Why do you say "another one bites the dust"?
We need #5 hitter. With Soriano, sheffield, and Lee gone, there isn't a lot to chose from except Drew whose value goes up with each signing.

Not to mention that these are all long contracts. 8 years for Soriano, 6 years for Lee. Drew is going to be looking for 5, minimum.

EDIT: Also the 5 years deals for Matthews Jr and Pierre. I mean, if Matthews Jr can get 5 years 50 in this market ... ???

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Carlos Lee's six-year deal with the Astros is worth $100 million and contains full no-trade protection for the first four years.

Dont tell me people were actually banking on idea that the Sox were going to gun hard after Soriano & Carlos Lee??

Even before Drew opted out, it was a forgone conculsion that right field didnt rank among the top priorities for the Sox.

They needed to go after one of these guys if they are considering trading Manny.

I think it's more a matter of they needed a #5 hitter who could actually provide some semblance of protection for Manny. They had some of the worst 5-hole numbers in baseball last year. The best options for that spot all happen to be corner outfielders, that's all.

Although, if they had gone hard after Lee or Soriano I would have been shocked.

No surprise here. I wonder how their team shapes up for next year. The past few years they've been dependant on pitching, while lacking in offense (With the exception of 2004, perhaps). With the possibility of losing Pettitte and Clemens this year, seems like it might be the opposite this coming year. Plugging Lee into the middle of that lineup won't spark a complete turnaround, but it certainly will help.

I say a 4 year deal with an automatic kicker clause for a 5th year if Drew, say, makes 3 all star teams or wins a WS MVP or an AL MVP or something like that.

Offer him 4 years for 60 million with that clause, and a team option for the 5th year.
