I'd be for it. Has had great nmbers in the Nl, the only question is can he convert it to the AL?

Pretty good stats the last few years. Comparing his WHIP of last year to other closers:

Mariano .96

Wagner 1.11

T. Jones 1.27

Street 1.09

Cordero 1.10

He doesn't give up a ton of hits but he will walk guys...over the last three years his walks per inning pitched is 50% higher than the other guys I compared him to.

Don't know much about him, the numbers are promising, but guys who sometimes have trouble with the strike zone often find more trouble against very patient teams such as the Yankees. Frankly, closers who walk guys pi$$ me off. Then again he is still pretty young, and could be just coming into his own, so there might be a fit here, but I might also need to get some Ativan from the Doc for those Urbina/Slocumb type nights.

By the way...Papelbon's WHIP was .78 last year.

urbina??

1st saturday in a sox uniform he comes in with the bases loaded

goes 3-2 on arod irod and palmeiro then whiffs all 3

I remember one time we were playing Oakland. We're up two and he comes in. First guy goes yard and its a one run game. The next three are warning track flyouts, but the guy did not help Gradys health. (Maybe JW)

I hate losing Willy Mo, but if this trade is on the table, you have to take it.

What about Crisp and Bowden for Cordero??

Pena + for Cordero and Austin Kearns.

Dont throw your hopes into this one. They will need to throw a whole lot more than just Wily into this. Consider that Cordero is under 25 and is one of the best closers in baseball and swinging wily may not even have a place on the sox team. If the Nats are going to part with probably the best young closer in baseball, they will want a lot in return. Expect them wanting Wily, Hansen and one of those golden goose pitching prospects for them to budge.

Bowden is really hi on wily tho. And with them losing there big power guy, I say he might go for wily mo and just 1 prospect. But I agree with MC yet again lol in that are they just giving up on Hansen?

Yeah I could understand them trading for an established veteran closer to come in and hold down the fort for a year or two, but if they're going after Cordero, to me, it means that they don't think Hansen will ever close for this team.

based on his performance to date, does anyone really think Hansen looks to be the closer of the future?

IMO the kid was rushed to the bigs because he threw 97-98 and never had gotten acclimated to the higher level of ball, never had a chance to gain confidence and command, etc.

So you're giving up on a 23 year old who has pitched a total of 41 innings in his career?  Jesus christ guy ... you can't be serious.

no sir, didn't mean to imply that at all.

I just raised the question "based on what we've seen to date" does anyone see him being the closer of the future? In other words, his being rushed to the majors leaves me unsure whether he's got the goods or the make-up to achieve that status.

I'm not giving up on him...I'm raising the point that the FO brought him along too fast and did not allow him to develop into a closer of the future...and it may be harder for him to get there now after struggling at this level. That's all.

Chad Cordero is only 24. I throw Hansen under the bus if we can get Cordero.

Nipper really screw Hansen last year with the right pitching coach Hansen should be an ALL Star closer.

If WMP/Hansen can net Cordero...you just might have to pull the trigger.

Then you can throw $$ at Drew, which by all accounts the Sox are doing anyway.

naive. Very naive. To assume that a GM would take anything less than a steal in his favor for arguably the most useful commodity on his team is naive at best. Cordero will be a Nat unless the sox throw 3 young players at the Nats, all with MLB impact next yr.

I think Drew is gonna be too much $$$, so WMP I think will be staying in BOS. So if they want Cordero, they will have to figure out something else. I wasn't being naive, I was just stating that Bowden for some reason has a love infactuation with WMP, and I was saying maybe we can exploit that. I mean look at the top prospects that he passed on in all the Soriano trade talks, now all he gets is 1, 2nd round pick from the cubs in the supplemental draft. He thought by keeping him he was gonna get 2 first rounds, but since then cubs finished in the bottom 15 in the nl, he only gets the one. He gets 1 pick for loosing the best player on the market. Talk about your all time back fire. The point I was trying to make only if sarcastically, is that hes not a good GM and maybe we could doop him:D

Look at all the prospects he passed on? Nobody was ponying up any prospects for a half yr rental. That was the problem. Now, he gets the 3rd pick in the draft and a supplemental which will turn out to be the 33rd pick in the draft from the cubs. He will get far more in compensation than he was offered during the yr.

As for WMP, nobody will ignore the fact that the sox are trying to fill his position. Therefore, the sox are giving the perception that they dont like him. That lowers his value. The Nats have no intention of dealing Cordero unless they are blown away, aka high value. The sox will likely have to send one of Bard/Bowden/Buchholz, WMP and Hansen to even start the negotiations. Cordero isnt just a closer, he was the saves leader 2 yrs ago and is one of the best closers in the game.....at 24!!. He should ask for the moon for that kind of production and he will get it. If he puts Cordero on the market, other teams in baseball will blow away a WMP straight up deal, absolutely blow them away.

You make a strong reasonable argument. I can see where your coming from, at the trade deadline tho CHW where offering Mcarthy and like 1 or 2 minor leaguers. I would have to say thats better then what there gonna get now. But you never know who they will draft tho. If Pap, Beckett and dice-k work out like there hoping, there pitching staff is set for awhile to come. That said it wouldn't be surprising to see them trade some of there young arms for help at either SS, RF or whatever they deem hi priority.

I wouldnt. The way that pitching is valued these days, if Becket, Paps, and Daisuke work out, that leaves 2 spots in the rotation open for next yr. Out of all of the sox minor league prospects to date, they would be lucky if any of them are ready by next yr or even the yr after. Pitching is almost totally impossible to replace unless you grow it. Look at the yankees for that. If you have it, keep it unless you dont need it anymore (like the tigers) then fill your holes.

Ok, sorry for my ignorance, I don't get to watch our young guys pitch in the minors, or watch them come up. I more or less hear what everyone else says about them.

Who in the minors is considered to be a hi prospect arm and ML ready in a couple of years? The 3 B's, Lester(if healthy), Hansen and Delcarmen( I know both are on Sox ML team now).If theres anymore please feel free to add on here.

With that list there and i'm sure i'm missing some. Not all of them will work out or maintain the hi expectations, with that said would it be that bad to move a couple of them now while they are thought to be hi valued? One or two of those guys should fetch a premeire SS( which to my understanding, we don't have in our farm system). Would it be that bad of a trade?
