cbssportsline reports that soriano rejected washingtons offer of 5 year 70 mil.

looks like whoever wants him is gonna have pay him a s*** load...maybe somewhere in the 16 mil./yr range

Wow, he rejected 5 and 70? I don't think hes going to get much higher an offer than that. I think he might just be determined to test the waters.

He probably wants to play somewhere else. I would love to have him in Boston, though he would probably just varify the concerns I've had about him his whole career after a few stellar years. The question is whether he had the greatest year he will ever have or will he go back to the poor-fielding, free swinging layer we all knew from his Yankees days. If he stays as is he will likely go down as one of the best players of this generation, like it or not.

Wow he really wants out of Washington. It would be nice to see him with the Sox but I can't see them pursuing this guy just because he wants too much money. Wouldn't be surprised though if the Yankees went after him again. He's going to be one pricey player and to be honest with you I think the Yankees are the only team who will pay what he wants.

Well, I don't doubt he wants to play somewhere else. I'll hold my opinion on him as a Red Sox until I hear whether or not the Sox are interested.

PS - He was a free swinging poor fielder this year too, he always has been. Thats just his game. Don't forget, he was one home run shy of being a 40-40 with New York. His worst year was that first one with Texas, other than that the guy has always put up numbers.

Actually, he posted a +8 FRAA in LF this year, and drew 66 walks.

Oh I know. I have very distinct feelings about Soriano: I never liked him that much as a Yankee, Ranger or Nat. I never thought he was that good, I thought people overvalued his tools, etc., but this guy just keeps proving me wrong. He just says "F* U on-base percentage, how about 40 HR, 40 2B and 40 SB!!?? You LIKE that? You LIKE that??!!"

I hope the yankees go after him, although I'm sure they won't. I would go after Cano in a heartbeat.

If this is about money, he's NOT going to the Red Sox. If this is about playing second, it's POSSIBLE but I doubt it. The Red Sox seem to emphasize defense more than they used to and he is a horrible defensive second baseman.

That having been said, he's very athletic and has become an above average defensive outfielder. I haven't seen him play the outfield very much so I'm going on what I've read, but that's what I hear.

I just don't see him as a fit in Boston given what we know about the Red Sox front office. UNLESS they trade Manny Ramirez and are desperate for a productive bat. The guy steals 40 bases in a season but the Red Sox don't believe in taking that risk as often. He'd be a 20 steal a season (MAX) guy in Boston. His lack of plate discipline hurts his chances, but then again the Sox signed Alex Gonzalez who suffered a similar problem. However, he's de-valued by the FO's principles a bit.

I've always been a fan of his athletic ability but always thought his lack of plate discipline would KILL him eventually. He really hasn't shown that which is kind of a mystery to me.

I don't see the Sox offering more than 4 years @ 12 mil a year and he will probably get more than that elsewhere.

On Soriano to the Yankees though? This makes no sense to me UNLESS they trade A-Rod and get nothing for him. Where would he play? They already have Matsui, Damon, and Abreu signed for big money in the outfield and Robinson Cano as their team's best value at second base. They've got Giambi on the team as a DH already and have an affordable (for them) option on Sheffield. I don't see Soriano has a place in NY.

The Mets, Angels, Dodgers, Giants, all have the resources and need to add a big bat.

While it would be cool to see him in Boston because of his sheer athletic ability, I don't see it happening.

I want the Sox to go after Soriano, but they can't look at him as a formidable replacement for Ramirez. Sure, it's going to be a wash in the field once Sori figures out how to play the wall...but the protection behind Ortiz is simply not going to be there without Ramirez. Manny is a basket case, we all know that, and have come to accept, even at times embrace, that over the years. But the fact of the matter is, the guy is I would say one of the top 20 pure hitters EVER to play the game. I've watched him first hand play pitchers like fiddles, purposely swinging and missing to set up later at-bats. He's refined at slapping the ball the other way, or pulling the ball for a mammoth homerun. He can bloop a pitch up the middle, or foul off pitches until he finds something he can do something with. These are the things that Soriano doesn't do. Take your chances with Ramirez or take your chances with Ortiz is a debate that pitchers and managers will weigh and think about for days leading up to a matchup...Take your chances with Ortiz or take your chances with Soriano is a no-brainer everytime.

I want the Sox to go after Soriano, but he's NOT the replacement for Ramirez, even though the power numbers are similar.

does he play 3rd for 17.5M per year after they deal arod to anaheim?

who else is going to pay that kind of coin if indeed he turned down what the senators offered him??

the dodgers??

maybe

houston??

they let beltran go who is a better all around player if you ask me

anaheim??

this may be the most obvious choice, unless they get involved in the arod stakes

in which case you may see a robby cano packaged just to get the cancer known as arod off the yanks roster in a deal for some young pitching and bullpen help

sure the yankees are full of outfielders and sheff has an option on the table too i believe??

why would that stop them

it didnt stop them from getting abreau despite having all the above

(i know matsui and sheff were hurt) and money isnt a problem for them

losing as an odds on favorite year in and out is their problem and they may hit 300M just to ensure no one else can compete with them next year

of course soriano may be staying in dc

who knows for sure?

Id say the Angels & Dodgers are right now the top suitor for Soriano (unless they trade for Manny)

Sheffield has a $13 million option year. NY is very much unlikely to pick up his option, especially after his comments towards Torre.

Posted

i read in a ny rag that they may indeed pick up sheffs option so he doesnt come to boston

as i said

all of this is pure speculation at this point

and as far as mccourt in los angeles goes??

hes got some internal monetary issues hes neglected that go far beyond the signing of alphonse soriano and may involve him needing to bail out of the dodgers situation

his boston real estate market was shall we say a bit overestimated

and hes getting his ass handed to him from what the inside people say in the banking industry.

I wouldn't mind Soriano at second' date=' Pedroia at short, Manny in left, Gary Matthews Jr. in center and Wily Mo in right[/quote']I like it, but I'd rather keep Gonzo at SS.

Where exactly would he play? I love Soriano but it's not worth the burden of giving everybody fair playing time and paying him huge amounts of money.

I wouldnt want him at third. I'd rather have Cano at third. But honestly, my real preference would be to find someone to hold third base (if we trade A-Rod) for a year for Eric Duncan. Maybe try to trade for a Mueller or sign Nomar or something. If Aramis Ramirez hits the market, see if he'll take a 1 year deal maybe.

no s*** he rejected it who cares about the money. the nats r the worst team in the NL who wants to play there they got no good fans, no manager, no pitching, no hitting get the f*** out of there, they suck
