Why not?

Gustavo Chacin (6-3, 5.90)

Josh Beckett, the only member of Boston's original starting rotation to be both healthy and still on the active roster, will take the ball on Sunday afternoon. The Red Sox will rely heavily on the lone survivor of their rotation to put forth a big outing.

Curt Schilling is temporarily sidelined with a strained lat muscle. Tim Wakefield, Matt Clement and Jon Lester are all on the disabled list. And David Wells was traded to the Padres on Thursday.

Beckett has settled into a groove over his last two starts, yielding just three runs over 13 innings.

The Red Sox, still missing several key players, should get Alex Gonzalez back at shortstop. Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek are expected to be activated, but manager Terry Francona doesn't plan to have either player in the lineup until Monday.

Manny Ramirez remains day-to-day with patella tendinitis in his right knee. David Ortiz continues to be sidelined while the Red Sox try to determine the cause of the heart palpitations he had last week.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (14-9, 5.11 ERA)

The right-hander seems to have rounded into form, putting together consecutive solid outings. Beckett suffered a tough-luck loss to the A's in his last start on Tuesday, giving up five hits and two runs over seven innings. He is 6-4 with a 4.83 ERA at Fenway Park. Beckett is 1-1 with a 6.38 ERA in four outings against the Blue Jays.

TOR: LHP Gustavo Chacin (6-3, 5.90 ERA)

Chacin pitched well Tuesday in his last start, which was his second appearance since returning from more than a two-month stay on the disabled list with an elbow injury. The left-hander gave up one run on two hits, including a solo home run, with four strikeouts and three walks in 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision against the Guardians. Chacin might have pitched longer, but the index finger on his throwing hand cramped up and he was pulled after 96 pitches. Against the Red Sox, he is 3-0 with a 5.11 ERA in five career outings.

Player to watch

Third baseman Mike Lowell has quietly gotten hot, hitting .367 over his last eight games.

Oh and Trot said theyre going to try to get the team back in the post-season. Even Dennis Eckersley said he thinks its foolish to talk about the Sox & the playoffs this year.

Anyoone counting the sox out already is full of s***. Thereis a reason to be pessismistic but wait till they start losing after all the guys get back. Then count them out.

How's their rotation?

Schilling (will miss start due to strained shoulder)

Beckett

Snyder

Gabbard/Jarvis

Tavarez (Wakefield keeps getting pushed back due to nagging back soreness)

Papelbon, our star closer, is set to undergo an MRI. His season is in question. Mike Embree, oops I mean Timlin, will be the temp closer in his absence

Do tell why the Sox traded away their best starter in the month of August, Mr. Boomer?

Once they moved Wells they knew it was over. This team is not going to make a run with the pitching staff they have. You might be the only one who doesn't think it is over.

Just look at our rotation for what could be a big series vs. Chicago.

Tavarez. Sucks

Gabbard. Sucks as well.

Snyder. Mirage. Sucks.

Don Orsillo, i guess trying to give reason why offense & Beckett are so far sub-par today.

"Well on days of rainouts it will mess up the routine of pitchers & positional players" (camera showing shots of Beckett in dugout)

That does explain on the other end with Chacin throwing a 1 hitter through 4 innings and his offense getting 3 runs off of Beckett with 5 hits (4 Doubles, HR)

Posted

well Lowell being greedy leading off the 9th inning (youre down by 6, you stay at 2nd) f***ed up this inning. It could be a 6-2 or even 6-3 ball game with 1 out

Good job Sox continue to spiral downward, any others calling us out to "keep the faith" this year?
