Royals acquire Odalis Perez

Royals acquired LHP Odalis Perez, RHP Blake Johnson, RHP Julio Pimentel and cash considerations from the Dodgers for RHP Elmer Dessens.

Now this is the kind of gamble the Royals needed to try. If it turns out that Perez is a waste of money over the next year and a half, well, they were just going to spend the cash on the next Reggie Sanders anyway. Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee aren't going to Kansas City. In exchange for taking on a portion of Perez's contract and giving up Dessens, the Royals add a couple of more intriguing young arms in Johnson and Pimental. Perez should move into the Royals' rotation, if not immediately then by the second week of August. He's a pretty weak bet for the rest of this year, but he could be the Royals' best pitcher in 2007.

If you ask me, that was a lateral move. Perez had one good year with the Dodgers a couple of years ago and Dessens never lived up to expectations.
