With Wakefield likely going to the DL, it's time to put Papelboner in the rotation and make

Hansen the full time closer. It's the only logical thing to do outside of giving up a ridiculous amount for a big name starter. Outside of Zito and Willis which will cost an awful lot to get, there's not much out there.

I don't see why not, he used to be a starter, Hansen was a closer in the minors I believe. An extremely shallow rotation gets deeper and don't lose that much in the bullpen.

It's not as easy as you think it is. Stretching a pitcher out this late the year is not something teams do in pennant races. it is completely out of the question.

It would take to long to stretch him out and for him to get into a rythm as a SP. Smoltz was a SP for 10+ years. After transitioning to closer, he still didn't switch back to SP half-way through the year when they needed pitching. They waited until the offseason.

I'd rather they show some caution with him. That's a pretty drastic change on an arm that only started in the minors for a little over 2 years. Besides, it's not like he's ineffective in his current role.

I think it's worth the risk if there you can't get another SP.
He's there most valuable commodity. I doubt they would do anything to risk his health.

I want Paps to remain the closer for 06, but in 07 Make Manny Delcarmen the Closer Hansen the 8th inning man, and have a top four of the rotation of

Schill

Paps

Beckett

Lester

there is no way Paps will leave the closers role this year, you cannot take a guy from one inning of work 4 or 5 times a week and hope he can immediately give you quality starts

he would get hurt

next year maybe, but we can do something much better for our future if we just trade for someone solid, we do not need an ace of staff

putting Papelbon in the rotation makes the overall staff even weaker. I don't see anyone else in that bullpen that can be a reliable closer and without a bullpen that can hold leads, it doesn't matter who's starting

fat man is almost ready

man i'd love to get 75 innings out of him down the stretch

a veteran lefty who competes and has playoff experience is gold to me.

if clement had this mans balls we'd be discussing him for a cy young

paplebon is on his way to rookie of the year cy young and perhaps co mvp with ortiz at tthe rate hes tossing at..

you want to do what with him??

lets revisit this next year man

hansen and manny d have improved with each outing

paple has been lites out his entire time here as well

Agreed, It's n time to panic, get Wells up here and hopefully he'll stay healthy, and in the emantime, ride out any one of the 5th starter's we have until Wake or Clement get back, once we get an established rotation this team will take off.

god I'd love to get Boomer back. He was rolling when he went down to that freak line drive and he'd be a perfect 5th starter

Me too. And I think the very fact that he’s talking to reporters again is a good sign in itself. If he still felt he wasn’t able to come back and contribute sometime soon, then he wouldn’t have made himself available. A fresh arm and an experienced pitcher like him could be the answer to the depleted rotation.

Back to the topic of the thread…I can’t wait until next year’s ST to see how/if the Sox will make the decision to move Paps back to starting. Obviously the decision will be made in part by how Hansen performs. I expect both will get the chance to start in ST, and then go from there.
