Hello. I am a Red Sox fan, and I am working on a project for a folklore class. For my project, I am researching the different versions of the story of the Curse of the Bambino and how it started. Would anyone be willing to share their version of the story with me? I

would greatly appreciate it.

The Yankees were lilly white also, and although they signed they broke their color line about 2 years befor the Sox, they remained largely lilly white through the 60's while the Sox brought in Stars like Earl Wilson, Reggie Smith, and George Scott.

the thought of the curse comes from the Red Sox winning the 1918 World Series, their 5th in a short franchise history, they dominated the big leagues from 1912-1918, Then they sold Babe Ruth, then a pitcher, to the New York Yankees. He became the home run hitter with the Yanks, they own 26 World Series before we won another one. The term was not that popular until Boston Globe Columnist Dan Shaughnessy wrote a book about it

If we just sucked the whole time it would not be a big deal. We lost painfully, Bucky Dent, Bill Buckner, the Big Red Machine, etc., etc. those are just the headliners.

did the yankees also give willie mays a tryout and deem him not good enough like tom yawkey did??
The Sox never gave Mays a tryout. They sent a scout to look at him. The scout was a racist pig, and he gave a negative report about Mays. I believe the Sox gave Jackie Robinson a tryout, but no team at that point had broken the color barrier, so you can't single the Sox out on that one. The Yankees then as now had more economic resourcesand clout than any other team. Their organization knew about all the talent in the Negro leagues, and I am sure that Robinson would have been proud to break the barrier with the Yankees. The fact is that they were the second to last team to break the barrier. They wsaw no reason to upset their apple cart while they continued to win World Championships. They paid the price in the 60's as did the rest of the AL.

whatever you do, please conclude your research project with acknowledgement that CURSES DON'T EXIST or your classmates will think your a tool, as is anyone that ever gave credence to such a ridiculous story.

Conclude that it was a fabrication and creation by a sportswriter that made that sportswriter a ton of money.

No worries; the point is not to write about the curse as if it is a real thing, it is simply to look at how it started and why it stayed so popular throughout the years. So far, what I've learned is that it was started by a writer for the Boston Globe, and most people believe that the Yankees are responsible for keeping it going. I do greatly appreciate everyone's feedback. You've helped me out a lot.

the media is responsible for keeping it alive, ESPN especially, the Yankees winning is just more fuel for the fire

Dan Shaughnessy is the Boston Globe guy, he wrote a book entitled "The Curse of the Bambino" might want to check that out

Shaughnessy is an imbecile...I wouldn't reccomend touching any of his garbage, let alone reading it :)

Please remove Buckner's name from the list. Without the guy the Sox never make it to the W.S. and his 'E' was made AFTER the BP had already blown the lead.

As far as I'm concerned Buckner deserves the right to s*** on the face of anyone who claims he cost the Sox a WS title.

Billy Buck's also set a record for LOB during that series that stands until this day. If he had gotten just one or two stinkin hits the series would have been over and out and the error never would have happened. He deserves the goat's horns, because it was due to his complete ineffectiveness at the plate that they got to extra innings in game 6. The error was just the icing on the cake. The Mets pitchers kept putting on the guys in front of Buckner with 2 outs to load the bases , and kept making out. I still get mad when I think about it.
