Texas (32-28) at Boston (35-23) 1:20 pm EDT (1st game)

BOSTON (Ticker) - Four years after he was drafted out of high school, Jon Lester is about to have his dream come true.

Lester is scheduled to make his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox on Saturday when they face the Texas Rangers in the opening game of a day-night doubleheader.

A 22-year-old lefthander from Tacoma, Washington, Lester (NR) was 3-4 with a 2.70 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 11 starts with Class AAA Pawtucket.

Playing their first day-night twinbill in nine years, the Rangers counter with John Rheinecker (2-0, 1.77 ERA), who makes his fourth start of the season. He gave up two runs and seven hits in eight innings of Sunday's victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Trot Nixon went 4-for-4, including a three-run homer, and Mike Lowell hit an eighth-inning sacrifice fly to lead the Red Sox to Friday's 4-3 triumph over the Rangers.

Michael Young belted his fourth homer of the campaign for Texas, which is 17-12 on the road.

Thanks jsing for putting the batter vs pitcher matchups in last nights game thread. Keep this mojo going

Last nights game was a great one, me and my friends course stayed the whole way through. It was a thrill sitting in the rain as it came down harder and the game got oh so closer than it should have been. Wake was his usual self, giving his heart & soul but saw another win not go towards his record. That 4-7 record is the most skewed in the American League. I laugh at those who wrote Trot off for this season, a dirt dog who always tries to give it his all. How about that clutch 2 out HR & hit to get manny to 3rd in the 8th inning? ;)

.346 with RISP/2 outs

.357 with bases loaded (15 RBIs)

Yes Papelbon blew his first save but that gave fire in his belly and it was obvious right away that Texas would have no chance of coming back. Struck out the side, all swinging!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2 lefty rookies facing one another. No indications of which way this one can go. Rheinecker has been very effective in his first 3 major league starts, sporting a 1.77 ERA (4 Runs in 20.1 innings)

The current weather forecast provided by the Red Sox' private weather service calls for some degree of rain showers that could possibly impact the scheduled 1:25 p.m. start of today's Sox-Rangers game, the first of a day-night double-header.

Rain showers are expected to decrease as the afternoon progresses.

The Sox announced they'll open the gates at 11:25 a.m. Another weather update was scheduled at noon.

On to Red Sox matters:

--David Wells received a second opinion in San Diego yesterday and according to Terry Francona the opinion was in keeping with Sox physician Thomas Gill's diagnosis. Wells has a deep bone contusuion on the right knee cap and he'll need rest. Francona anticipated that Wells would stay in San Diego, his home, through the Sox' next road trip and then head back to Boston. There doesn't appear to be a timetable for his return.

Francona also said he thought Wells was gearing to come back rather than retire because of the way he was throwing before the latest injury.

--Looks like Manny Ramirez will get a rest in the second game of the twinbill. Francona also said Doug Mirabelli would catch the night cap and he was up in the air on Trot Nixon, who may play both games and get Sunday off.

--As we reported in Friday's edition of the Globe, it looks like Jon Lester's stay in Boston will be long-term and not just an "emergency start" particularly considering Wells might not be in the picture for a while.

--David Pauley will be available in the bullpen today.

The Rangers were slow with their lineup this morning, but here's the Red Sox lineup:

1. Coco Crisp, CF

2. Mark Loretta, 2B

3. David Ortiz, DH

4. Manny Ramirez, LF

5. Kevin Youkilis, 1B

6. Jason Varitek, C

7. Mike Lowell, 3B

8. Trot Nixon, RF

9. Alex Gonzalez, SS

-- Jon Lester, SP

Gary Matthews-DH

Michael Young-SS

Mark Texeira-1B

Hank Blalock-3B

Mark DeRosa-RF

Kevin Mench-LF

Ian Kinsler-2B

Gerald Laird-C

Jerry Hairston Jr.-CF

-John Rheinecker-P

Today's game will not start on time (1:25 p.m.).

Sox spokesman John Blake said the team will re-assess the weather situation at 1:30 p.m. The Sox are concerned about starting the game too late because of the 8:05 nightcap starting time. The team needs time to be able to clear the park and get ready for the night crowd.

The other consideration is the people holding tickets for the afternoon game had been rained out in April and the team wants to make every effort to get the game in.

The Red Sox say their forecasts the weather is supposed to clear eventually, but the question is when.

From Fox, they expect about an hour delay.

Fox is showing the A’s/Yankees game now. Are they supposed to cut over to the Sox game if/when that begins? I have the TV on mute, mainly because I can’t stand listening to Tim McCarver.

When the game starts they'll definitely cut out from the Yanks game and viewers who were supposed to see the Sox game will see the Sox game.

We are really starting to see the farmhands make their names known at the Fens

Rookies appearing with Red Sox

2005- Cla Meredith, Kelly Shoppach, Adam Stern, Abe Alvarez, Manny Delcarmen, Jonathan Papelbon, Alejandro Machado, Lenny DiNardo

2006- Jonathan Papelbon, Adam Stern, Manny Delcarmen, Lenny DiNardo, Abe Alvarez, Jermaine Van Buren, Craig Hansen, David Pauley & Jon Lester

From what I can gather, others poised for this year- Dustin Pedroia, Edgar Martinez, Craig Breslow, David Murphy

Murphy is one who i really expecting to come up with kaplar out for a little bit and Willie Mo out i just dunno if his futur will be with the sox since we have so many outfielders

Ugh, I wonder what they're gonna do about tonight's game which I'm going to:dunno:

That's one of the concerns about waiting too long to start the afternoon game. They need time to clear and clean the park. Yet the afternoon crowd has already had a game postponed. You will have no problem with the 8:00 PM game, assuming you're talking MASS Transit.

It’s refreshing to know that the Sox are in a position where they have a solid corps of farmhands ready and waiting to make a significant contribution at the ML level.

Sox will wait

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

The Sox have decided to wait until between 3-3:30 p.m. to make a decision on today's game. Spokesman John Blake said the team should have a better idea by then on how to deal with not only the afternoon game but the night game as well.

Blake said there are a number of scenarios being considered. With fans already in the ballpark, one option is to wait as long as it takes to play the first game, and perhaps cancel the second game. But the team has not given up just yet on playing both games. We'll have an update in the 3 o'clock hour.

Rain is SNAFU'ing the second half of the season. One of the highlights of the Sox schedule was more time off down the stretch this year than last year. One of those off-days has been consumed to make a 5-game series against the Yankees, they now have a DH at Yankee Stadium, and there is now the possibility of having to make up another TEX game. Yo, Dud Selig, can we get the balanced schedule back?

Well, logic would say that if today's game is rained out that they would play the Rangers in a DH tomorrow. I personally would love that as I can't watch this game anyway. GO RAIN.
