The Red Sox get their second look of David Wells this season on Friday when they play the second game of a four-game series with the Rays at Fenway Park.

The 43-year-old left-hander replaces Lenny DiNardo in the Sox rotation and is coming off a sore right knee but looked effective in his last rehab start last Sunday for Triple-A Pawtucket in Scranton, Pa. He earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings while striking out three.

"We'll keep an eye on him," Sox skipper Terry Francona said. "He went 66 [pitches] in Scranton. More will certainly depend on how hard he works to get where he's at, how he feels. I'd love to see him reel off 80 pitches and be in the ninth inning. I know he's done it before. We'll just see how he's doing."

The Red Sox meanwhile with have to contend with another lefty who has traditionally given them fits. Scott Kazmir will be looking for his eighth win of the season. The southpaw is 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in nine starts against the Sox.

"It's been good so far facing this team, from Fenway to our place, but you can't take that for granted," Kazmir said. "We've faced them and they've seen me. You just have to counter with the adjustments they've made. So it's going to be a cat-and-mouse game. It's going to be fun. It's not like I'm going to change anything. I'm just going to try to keep doing what I've done and keep pounding the strike zone and get quick outs."

The Red Sox have won four of the first seven meetings with Tampa Bay this season.

Pitching matchup

BOS: LHP David Wells (0-1, 15.75 ERA)

After a successful rehab start, Wells takes the mound in the Majors for the first time since April 12. Boomer missed more than a month with a sprained right knee. He was very efficient in five innings of four-hit work in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket, throwing 45 strikes out of 66 pitches. Wells has been masterful in his career against the Devil Rays, going 10-1 in 16 starts with a 2.91 ERA and just 13 walks.

TB: LHP Scott Kazmir (7-2, 2.39 ERA)

Kazmir struck out a career high-tying 11 in his last start, working eight innings of a shutout against the Marlins. The 22-year-old has been on a tear lately, posting a 7-1 record and 1.65 ERA in his last nine starts. His May ERA is 0.65, tied with Oakland's Barry Zito for best in the AL.

Player to watch

Jonathan Papelbon threw 31 pitches, recorded Thursday's final four outs and became the first closer in baseball with 16 saves. He has not allowed a run in eight games covering 8 1/3 innings of work since yielding his only run May 3 against Toronto.

Shouldn't he be in school instead of making a gameday thread.

Well he should know better than to mess with the MOJO. I hope a new thread is started so the MOJO is continued.
