Scouting Report: Converted from catcher to a pitcher in July 2004 after unimpressive numbers at the plate. The transition to pitching has shown signs of success later in late 2004 and 2005. Fastball reaches 97 mph. Also throws a decent changeup and slider. Breakout season in 2005.

Could Martinez become a Hansen-esque prospect? It seems like hes dominant, hes got all the tools, and the sox said in december that he and Jesus Delgado could be in the Red Sox bullpen this year should someone falter early on. Jesus Delgado was dealt to the Marlins for Beckett, but Martinez is still around. He is 24, not exactly someone they will baby.

He is behind Hansen in terms of development. Big Edgar has an explosive fastball. The thing with him is he needs to refine his secondary pitches mainly his changeup and his slider but he is a very intriguing prospect who is quietly climbing the sox prospect list.

Martinez is moving slowly (still at AA to start the season) and keep in mind that this guy WAS a catcher from 1999 through 2004, so he's still in the beginning stages of his development as a pitcher.

He seems to have incredible control (3:1 strikeout to walk ratio) 9.24 K/9 over his EARLY career, but the Sox aren't rushing him nor should they. I'd expect him to arrive in the big leagues after both Delcarmen and Hansen, but I see no reason why we won't see him either as a September callup or in 2007 in a similar role as Manny Delcarmen is playing this season (AAA potential mid-season callup).
