Coco's out on Sunday

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff

Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's game after jamming the index finger on his left hand.

Crisp injured the finger while trying to steal third base after he had singled then stole second base in the third inning of Saturday night's game. Orioles' pitcher Bruce Chen saw the steal attempt and threw to third baseman Melvin Mora who tagged Crisp out on the play.

Crisp's finger started to swell during the game and remained swollen overnight.

"It was just a weird slide," said Crisp on Sunday. "I didn't feel it right then but as the innings went on it got a little stiff, that's pretty much it... Somewhere in all the twists and turns of that slide, it got jammed a little bit."

Adam Stern will get the start in center field and bat leadoff on Sunday. Crisp is expected to be back in the lineup for the Fenway opener on Tuesday.

Nothing in there indicates to me that this is something to be concerned about. Honestly, if he says it only started to bother him as the innings went on, then it is a bruise. If he broke a knuckle he would have known it right away. It seems like someone is misinformed on this one which is definetly possible. Someone might have heard wrong, or been misinformed because even if he did have a broken knuckle he wouldn't be out a month with it. 15 days tops.

BALTIMORE -- When manager Terry Francona posted his lineup card on Sunday morning, there was one notable name missing, and you couldn't miss it.

Coco Crisp was replaced in the leadoff spot and in center field by Adam Stern.

This wasn't just a routine day off -- it's too early in the season for that. As it turns out, Crisp jammed his left index finger when he was thrown out trying to steal third base in the third inning of Saturday's game.

By the end of Boston's 2-1 victory, Crisp had started to feel a little swelling and stiffness in the finger. It is believed to be a minor injury, and his absence from the lineup was basically just a precaution.

"We have the off-day tomorrow, so it's a perfect time to let it heal," said Crisp.

After stealing second, Crisp thought he had third snagged easily. But Orioles starter Bruce Chen stepped off the mound and spun around, catching Crisp off guard. Crisp's surprise at seeing Melvin Mora set up and ready to tag him out was the reason for the awkward slide, which caused the injury.

"Just a weird slide," said Crisp. "I didn't feel it right then, I was worried about, 'How did they get me, how did they get the ball so quick at third?' Then it got a little stiff on me, that's pretty much it. Somewhere in the twists and turns of that slide, it got jammed a little bit."

Crisp fully plans on leading off on Tuesday afternoon, when the Red Sox play their Fenway Park opener, against the Blue Jays.

"There's going to be some swelling there," said Crisp. "I just have to get that swelling out -- it gets stiff. Once that goes out in a couple of days, I'll be all right, it will be OK. It's not painful or anything."

Crisp said that an X-ray was not necessary.

Earlier this weekend, Francona mentioned how it was tough to find playing time for Stern, who will likely go to Triple-A Pawtucket on April 20 because his Rule 5 clock will have expired.

"Guys always have a way of getting in there. It never fails," said Francona.

from that article, theres no evidence that its broken. Especially since Crisp sayd it was unnecessary to take an x-ray

I hope I am misinformed - Mustard and Johnson do talk up a lot of scenarios - and I only caught the last 30 seconds of the show. If it's not true, thank GOD and forget I brought it up. It was the end of the show and now they have FoxSportsNet on. If I hear anything, I guess I'll let you know.

If Crisp is out it's not the end of the world. I broke my knuckle punching a metal newspaper stand, it's been about 3 1/2 weeks and it is still sore sometimes when I move it. If he is out, the Red Sox will find a way to play without him. My question is do we trust Stern playing every day for a month or do we try and find a way that maybe WMP plays center?

I guess what im asking is what are the options if he is out?

not totally true on either account. Sometimes people can break fingers and not even know it, until they stop the activity they are performing. Once you come down from the "high" of a competition, you can notice the pain. The whole endorphin thing, trust me on this one, I dont want to get too technical. Also, it depends on the joint and the type of break before you truly know how long someone can be out. It could be displaced, although not to the naked eye and it may require reduction. Also, if it lightning rodded vs a simple transverse break, it could cause him to be out for longer. Another thing to consider is that many hand breaks may not even be evident on XRays for a week or so, so sometimes you call it a break before you actually see it on the XRay.

As far as swelling, sprains are associated with a ton of swelling initially because there is usually twisting and breaking of blood vessels due to the sheering force and the swelling is due to extravasating fluid from your busted vessels. As far as breaks, they are usually from blunt trauma and not a sheering force, so your body responds to the injury with inflammation by trying to heal it and hence you will swell over time as your body responds to the injury. This is a horribly simplistic view of it, but with finger injuries/breaks, you could be out 3 months or a week, so wait for the report. There are way too many scenarios to even consider....

From redsox.com

BALTIMORE -- As they were winging their way back to Boston following a 5-1 road trip to open the season, the Red Sox were presented with their first hurdle of the 2006 season.

WHDH-TV in Boston reported on Sunday evening that starting center fielder Coco Crisp could miss up to one month as the result of a broken knuckle in his left index finger.

Reached by phone on Sunday night, team spokesman John Blake told MLB.com that the club could not confirm the report and that there was no immediate change to the original diagnosis of a jammed finger. Crisp will be examined by the team's medical staff on Monday.

Crisp, batting .333 with a .458 slugging percentage in his first five games, injured the digit while sliding awkwardly into third base during a steal attempt in the third inning of Saturday's win in Baltimore.

Adam Stern replaced him in the leadoff spot and in center field.

By the end of Boston's 2-1 victory on Saturday, Crisp had started to feel a little swelling and stiffness in the finger. Manager Terry Francona said before Sunday's game that it was believed to be a minor injury, and that his absence from the lineup was basically just a precaution.

Crisp also indicated before Sunday's 4-1 win at Baltimore that he felt an X-ray would be unnecessary.

"We have the off-day [on Monday], so it's a perfect time to let it heal," said Crisp, who also said it was his full intention to be in the starting lineup when the Red Sox take the field on Tuesday afternoon for their home opener against Toronto.

I know all the sites on both squads. If you follow 2 teams (one for, one against) you learn which sites are good for breaking news and it isnt too hard to check up...

I knew I wasn't smoking crack with this report (at least pretty sure). I guess now is as good as anytime to break a small bone.

No one else has the story yet and until they do I'm not looking too much into this.
