Beckett roughed up, but Boston beats Devil Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Josh Beckett refused to make excuses for a rocky outing in his spring debut for the Boston Red Sox.

The right-hander, acquired from Florida in a seven-player trade during the offseason, allowed five runs in three innings of Boston's 8-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Monday.

Even though it's only spring training, Beckett did not take the performance lightly.

"It's not like I was just out there trying to throw my pitches. If I was going to do that, I would have just thrown a 50-pitch bullpen. When I'm out there, I'm trying to get people out," the 2003 World Series MVP said.

"I wanted to get a feel for these guys [the Devil Rays], just like they wanted to get a feel for me. They felt me pretty good," he said.

Julio Lugo and Jonny Gomes each hit a solo homer in the first for the Devil Rays, who also scored off Beckett on Carl Crawford's RBI double, Aubrey Huff's sacrifice fly and a wild pitch in the third.

Lugo homered on Beckett's fourth pitch, and Gomes' shot to left field came on the first pitch to Tampa Bay's cleanup hitter. The three-run third followed a perfect second for Beckett, who allowed five hits, struck out two and walked one.

Yeah I'm not worried. Like it was said in the ST thread it's his first start, new team ... if it continues I'll worry.

Does this really deserve it's own thread?

Big Whoop.

Spring Training is Spring Training, not to mention of his first 22 pitches through the first 2 innings, 19 were fastballs.

And 2 were hit out of the park in the first inning :D

...but yes it is spring training. Just gotta get my shots in where I can.

Randy Johnson wasn't too hot on Saturday...

But, like others are saying, it's only spring training. This is the first time these guys are facing players, who are actually trying to hit the ball, in months. Their performance now is rarely going to be indicative of how it will be come April.

I believe Wang and Wright were also bombed. Who cares about spring stats anyways. Spring training is to get your timing down for hitters and for pitchers to locate their pitches and to get in game shape. stats are meaningless.

I could have sworn you were just here to talk baseball. Your disappearing act followed by a reappearance to just post this is a little transparent, don't you think? It didn't take you long to show that you spend the majority of your time under a bridge.

As much as i hate to admit it same happened to Papelbon

w/e though beckett will be 100% by the end of the season he is a proven pitcher and will be fine especially with veterns like Schill and Wells helping him

Now that i think about it we should have Wells 4th for the diversity to fully set in and now teams will never have straight looks at three similar styles

Schilling (righty)

Wakefield (knuckler)

Beckett (righty)

Wells (lefty)

Clement (righty)

Perhaps most effective in a three game set is Wakefield, Beckett, followed by Wells. You go from slow to fast to the other side.

Not to be Johnny McPessmist here, but isn't that the rap on rotator cuff problems, can't throw the curve... and how many fastballs did he throw? Had to be at least 90%

The FO could be telling him 'no funny stuff until the season' or he could be guarding himself against an injury or he could be injured. This guy threw more curveballs than anyone in the national league last year percentage wise, I'm not waving red flags yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting Becketts next start.

Dude chill I'm just jokin around. I haven't been around lately because there hasn't been much going on baseball wise. The hot stove came and went, and there wasn't a whole lot to talk about until spring training started. Give me a break.

Lick my balls. Last time I was here I posted an article that had nothing to do with the Sox. It was about the Mets and their new TV station. Not exactly what a troll would do.

Who said anything about the last time you were here? Plenty of stuff worthy of discussion has happened in the month you have been gone. But, lo-and-behold, you only show up to post when an offseason acquisition has a rough outing in a meaningless ST game in an attempt to piss people off. I can't think of a more obvious case of trolling. Truth hurts, doesn't it?

ORS is right. While I don't necessarily think that your INTENTION was to TRY to piss anyone off, it's just a heads-up that these actions can definitely be defined as trolling, whether that was your intention or not.

Why do all the Red Sox fans on here suck Beckett's dick constantly? He has not proven himself over a full season yet, and until he does (and I hope he does and that I am wrong) I won't be a sucker.

yea ok, whatever. Each season he totals more starts/innings pitched. I do believe that I see a trend.

Jeez sorry. Most of the time I get here and articles are already posted. Guess I won't be posting anymore stories...

Lets see what matters to me ... pitching a few more innings in the regular season ... or a World Series MVP ... hmmmmm I can't decide. Dude wake up. The guy is 25 f***ing years old. HE'S 25! He's already been a World Series MVP ... and lets all remember what team he shut down to get that award. God forbid we're actually optimist talking about something. Sorry I'll make sure it's all doom and gloom from here on out.

OH NO CURT'S ANKLE IS GONNA FALL OF!!!

OH NO MANNY IS GONNA QUIT THE TEAM CAUSE HE'S UNHAPPY!!

OH NO FOULKE ISN'T GONNA BE THE SAME!!

AND LORETTA'S GONNA GET HURT AGAIN!!!!

AHHHH!!!

That better?

Riverside, like I said, I hope that he does pitch well this season. But just because he is young, doesn't mean that he will be great. Just look at Mark Prior, and especially Kerry Wood. They both showed signs of greatness, both are young, but chances are they will not be great again (though Prior has a chance).

Hammer, I am not a pessimist, nor do I bash guys like Wells, Curt, Foulke like you mentioned. I am just trying to be a realist because there are so many unknowns with Beckett. To name: It's a lot different pitching in Boston than Miami (weather, attention, media), he has had injury problems (blisters, shoulder). Maybe I am just not as optimistic about him because I haven't seen him pitch too often.

Lastly, I am not trying to piss everyone off everytime I comment in a Beckett thread, I am just trying to be a devil's advocate so that all us Sox fans don't keep sucking each other off about our team constantly. Especially since we have apparently scared away most of the people that didn't agree with us (like what happened to all those BH guys, Rivernator?).

He did throw way too many fastballs and said later he needs to locate those pitches. Still, he needs to snap off some more curveballs. What concerns me more is the fact he's not getting this work with Tek who's off playing for pride and country. Tek needs to be catching him especially against AL teams.

Ok Monster I got a few facts for you for your anti-dick sucking on Josh Beckett. First you talked of the weather, colder means less humidity means less blisters. Hes faced the media before the game which he became the WS MVP. ALso if you want to talk about injuries face this... hes improved over the years and hes going into the prime of his career. He has showned a great improvement and has limited his time on the DL. He will again improve this year and possibly lead us to another WS Title.

I'm just saying, the article you decided to post was not the ideal one to post after a long time off the board. Just makes it seem like trolling. However, I don't believe you are a troll anyway.
