Not always, they can't be free agents until I believe 5 full years in the majors. Which guys like Beckett have not reached.

No. Those 1 year deals are just salary for this coming year (rather than going through arbitration). A Plyer needs 6 years of Major League service, or to be non-tendered a contract to become a Free Agent. Zambrano, Crisp, etc. are not free agents, nor will they be next year.

Because he had less than 6 years and more than 3. Those guys have to pay him, so rather than go to arbitration to determine his salary, they negotiated it.
