This is BY FAR the best article I've found on Johnny Damon...he REALLY speaks up on this one...

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060122/COLUMNISTS0306/601220314/1065/SPORTS

This guy really needs to start working for his new employer.

He's supposed to be talking about how he can't wait to contribute to the Yankees clubhouse, not spend his face time talking about how he saved ours.

I just think this is really sad. I hope he lets go soon, for his sake. I don't see how his new teammates can appreciate these types of interviews.

Not much weirder than it must be for you guys to attack him so much.
Look at some of the threads before he signed with the Yanks, and you will see that he got hammered a fair bit.

I think we are moving on, but it takes longer for some of us than others. I think, though, more people than JD could have dreamt of are really looking forward to having this Crisp deal go through, or the likely alternatives (Reed?), if Crisp's trade falls apart.

One little month ago we were pulling our collective hair out, for one reason or another, over JD. I think he's going to very surprised by how quickly RSN is going to bond with its new center fielder, probably prior to Opening Day and during Spring Training.

Are you guys going to bump into him in public, on purpose, to make him jealous?

That's the only thing that comes to mind when I'm thinking about this whole situation: you guys had a bad break up and are going to try and make the other sorry for what they did. RSN is going to pretend Crisp is the new Mickey Mantle and Damon is going to try an not miss the cut off man. Should be fun to watch.

I wouldn't worry about that. The cutoff man will have plenty of time to move left or right to get the ball before it gets to him after the 4th hop.

It's okay, let it out. We're here for you.

Damon: "I wanted to retire there"

...Its really sad, but I can understand his feelings, they acted as if they didnt want him

Posted
Nope. The Red Sox wanted him for what they feel he's was worth. They're not going to overpay for a guy because he wants to retire with them, but isn't willing to accept less money to do so -- it is, after all, a business. Would you blow $12 mill. in what you didn't feel was the best interest for the team?
Posted
They offered him $11 mil a year. They could have matched the Yankees offer and made enough in revenue and income this year to pay his entire salary. Its not like theyre a small market team short on money. If it wasnt for his contributions they might not be as profitable. He helped them, so they should at least try to show more interest than they did.

If we had signed him, we wouldn't be agonizing whether they are giving up too much for Crisp. Damon could have played two more years in CF until one of the farmhands was ready, then Damon could have moved to a corner OF position about the time Marte would have been exploding onto the baseball scene.

He can't play RF with his arm, and he doesn't have enough stick to play LF.

He's gone....deal with it, seriously

Some people are treating him like he was an old girlfriend.

I am dealing with it. The others that are so upset that we have to give up prospects to fill the CF hole are not dealing with it. Did they think other teams would give us a good CF for free, or did they intend to play without one? While others were praising the FO for holding the line with Damon, I knew that it would cost prospects and $ to fill the position. Those complaining about the Marte departure should get over it. They are delusional if they think we are going to get Crisp without giving up a prospect.

no the red sox should have set a date earlier than when damon signed and said take it or leave it and then should have moved on to someone else.
They were still going to have to pay the price to get someone good. Are you saying that if the sox gave Damon a deadline that was a week earlier than the Yankee deadline that:

A. Damon would have signed with the Re Sox for 4/40 or

B. We would have been able to get Crisp cheaper.

if we had told damon take it or leave it then we could have made a deal to get reed a long time ago when they were talking about arroyo going for him along with someone else. the red sox dragged their feet when they could have had reed back awhile ago.

I agree with you, but nowhere is it etched in stone that you have to be a power hitter to play Left field or have a great arm to play right field. But dont get me wrong, I agree with you.

But last time I cheched, Damon was a pretty good hitter, just not on the power side. So he could essentially play left.

Without Damon do you think you guys win a World Series?

I get what you're saying, heck, look at the current champ's LF. Podsednik leaves something to be desired at the plate for a COF. However, for a team that plays 81 home games at Fenway, it would be a mistake to not take advantage of the fact that an all-stick/no-glove LF can work there better than most places. So, by putting Damon there, they'd lose a chance to put someone like Manny in the lineup.

Absolutely true.

But what about right field? granted, his arm would be horrible there, but its so big that it's ideal for an older center fielder who can cover ground.

Without Blowhorn do we win a world series? Possibly, but his game 1 HR was a huge momentum swing.

right, but that wasnt my point. Damon contributed a huge amount to the red Sox in 03-04 with his personality and performance. He helped transform that clubhouse into a fraternity and prodiced a LOT. Lets not forget Game 7 in 04, if he doesnt hit that Grand Slam whos to say the Sox still win that game. The Yankees might have stepped it up more rather than just laying down because they wouldnt feel like they were out of it.

If he had a below average arm, I might consider it feasable, but Johnny couldn't throw the ball through a sheet of wet tissue paper (pure hyperbole, but you get the point). I actually think he makes more sense for the Yankees, given that LF is expansive there and his weak arm won't matter as much because it's less of a throw to prevent 1st to 3rd's on a single, which is exactly why I wouldn't want him in RF.
