Devil Rays To Change Name?

Top officials from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are privately talking about ideas that would change the entire look and identity of the team for the 2007 season - from the name to the colors to the logos to the uniforms, according to the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES.

At the least, it seems likely the word "Devil" will be dropped, as it already is in some official team references. Then a decision has to be made whether to continue associating Rays with the sea creatures or to connect with the sun. Or there could be a new name, such as the Tampa Bay Tarpons.

The name issue likely will drive the others, and it reasons that if one is changed they all will be, and done neatly to commemorate what will be marketed as the 10th anniversary season.

Discussions are very much preliminary. Concepts have to be designed. Focus groups need to be convened. MLB officials have to be consulted. Procedures must be followed, including a March 31 deadline to notify MLB of a possible change and details by May 31. Decisions have to be made.

...I like the idea, i'm always one to be in favor of relocation, expansion, name changes, etc. (Just to change things up). Plus, Devil Rays is getting somewhat old.

I'll give you an advice. You don't have to change the nickname of your team. Just add the "second" city. The St. Petersburg Devil Rays of Tampa Bay. That will get more recognition and people will buy more D'Rays hats and jerseys all over the country.

I agree that if they change their name, they should also change the city name part from Tampa Bay to St. Petersburg.

Tarpon fishing is big down here in FL. People go out on skiffs in the coastal shallows and catch them with fly-rods. Supposed to put up a hell of a fight and are pretty tempermental about going after the bait. They are probably the best game-fish in the state, so I can see why they'd use the name since Floridians love their tarpon.

Hahah I remember one time when I went fishing in FL I caught a sheep-head fish. I tihnk that's what they call it. It got mad at me for catching it and took a s*** all over the boat while it was flailing around, lol.

They're gonna change the entire look of their organization and still lose friggin' 100 games. Why exactly are they doing this? So that they'll get more fans? Winning will probably do a better job of that.
