Rotoworld: White Sox agreed to terms with RHP Jon Garland on a three-year, $29 million contract. So much for the trade possibility. Garland will make $7 million next season, $9 million in 2007 and $10 million in 2008. It's quite a sum of money for a pitcher who was just a fourth starter until last season. Considering that most of his improvement was in his walk rate, there's nothing to stop him from reverting to past form next year. Then again, if he did turn in another year like his 2005, the White Sox would have had to give him at least a four- or five-year deal to keep him as a free agent. Garland probably won't be a $10 million-per-year pitcher going forward, but at least he is a good bet to stay healthy. This might not work out badly.

This deal does have a chance of backfiring on them. A good chance he could revert to what he was before this past season.

Chicago is expected to re-sign Contreras, or deal him off to another team.

He wanted to test the free agent market. Maybe he got an inkling and decidedto re-sign. In the past he would pitch real well except for one horrible inning per game, usually built around walks. It could backfire on us, but maybe he's just growing into a real good pitcher. He's still young, and hasn't been injured. I think it's a good deal for the White Sox. If he builds on what he did last year, 12 mil will look like peanuts three years from now.

Considering the price of pitching the last two offseasons, the Sox got him on the cheap. If he had another good year this year, given his age and ability, he could have commanded 5+ years @ over $10M per, a la Millwood and Burnett this year.

They may try to trade Contreras now. They implied either Garland or Contreras would get traded, depending on who's agent worked to get a deal done. At least we know how old Garland is. With Contreras, you have to cut him open and count the rings, like a tree. Can't trust Cuban birth certificates. I think they learned their lesson from the Konerko deal. It's better to lock them up earlier rather than later. You take a risk, but life's full of them.

Rotoworld: Jose Contreras is believed to want three guaranteed seasons at between $11 million and $12 million per year in a contract extension with the White Sox, so he may be trade bait now. "We have talked; we have not gotten too far," agent Jaime Torres said. "Jose is interested in staying in Chicago, but the market has been set [this winter]. Jose wants to stay, but it's a business, and we have to make sure his next contract is a good one." The White Sox are content to keep all six of their starters and put Brandon McCarthy into the pen to start the season, but it is a possibility that Contreras will go, perhaps for a reliever and a pitching prospect or two.

um Contreras, you think you're worth 12 million per season for 3 years? :harhar:

after seeing what the market has done this year and the way he pitched the down the stretch and into the playoffs i can see him asking for that. after washburn got 9 million dollars nothing would surprise me anymore.
