But can someone explain 'spread' to me....like is it if I said the Jets would beat the Saints by 6, and the final score was the Jets win 16-10...then I get a W for that, but if the Jets only win 14-10...I get a los??

Actually, if the Jets were favored by 6, you Took the Jets giving 6, and the score was 16-10 Jets, then its a tie ( also known as a push ) meaning no bet. If the Jets only win by 4, you would loose.

Basically the spread is developed by Vegas in an attempt to even out the difference between a favorite and an underdog by giving points to the underdog in an attempt to get the betting public to bet on a game. The idea is to have an equal amount bet on both teams. In this case the sports book ( or bookie ) can't loose. This is due to the fact that they charge vigorish ( which is a percent applied to the amount of the bet, kind of like a commission ). In otherwords, if you bet $ 100 and loose you pay $ 110 ( assuming the vigorish is 10% ) , if you win, you get the $ 100 that you bet. If in this example a book gets $ 20,000 bet on each team, he can loose. He'll ( they ) will either make $ 2,000 or there is no bet ( if the spread is tied ).
