if shoppach deal is done look for a 3rd team along with the red sox and rockies to make a deal happen

lets just say its Tampa Bay:

Boston: Aubrey Huff, rockies reliever Ryan Spier or Brian Fuentes (or see if any good prospects Rockies have for exchange)

Tampa Bay: rockies prospect, Bronson Arroyo

Colorado: Kelly Shoppach, 1 or 2 D-Rays prospects

-----------

Brian Fuentes is coming off of a great year with a 2.91 ERA in 74 appearances. Plus easily brought the gas to batters, 91 K's in 74.1 innings

Aubrey Huff has made 11 errors when playing 1st base in 149 games

38 errors when playing 3rd base in 223 games

9 errors when playing RF in 200 games

the consensus from all analysts and reports from the Sox F.O., he is their main target to acquire for 1st bas

oh sure olerud will be back, but just as a backup. olerud's legs arent what they used to be, reducing his speed on the basepaths and such, plus he will be 38 next spring. its not like Huff hits like Millar did this season. Huff has proved he can have seasons of 25+ HRs and 90+ RBIs

Look at the games Huff has played at 1st and check out his fielding %. I think thats more important than errors. Not to mention I think Huff is a top 5 1B hitter in the AL along with Giambi, Konerko, Texiera, and Sexson. If he can put up those numbers in Tampa Bay with that team...imagine how he would look hitting behind Manny and Ortiz and being covered by Varitek and Nixon....good god that could be excellent. He would also go back to 30 HRs a year playing in Boston.

The pitching market isn't great this year. What do you see our rotation as. We're losing a great #3 starter who can be an ace with more run support and we're getting a D-ray who hasn't proved himself outside of tropicana. Remember Fred Mcgriff. Kicked ass as a devil ray them became a cub and sucked. I say we trade alverez or someone else not arroyo.

Our projected Staff next year

Schilling

Wells

Arroyo

Wake

Clement

i would say even moving arroyo to the bullpen or keeping paplebon in there would be great and making this trade hurts our bullpen. We don't need any more offense we need some more bullpen help.

well its just Bronson Arroyo could be ace but it doesnt really have to do with run support, he has problems with consistency.

In 2005 he had 7 starts where he gave up 6 ER or more (6 of those starts, 7 ER)

6 starts he had lasted 5 innings or less

well of course Aubrey Huff hasnt proved himself out of Tropican Field, because thats where he has played his career, it doesnt mean he will give us a "2005 Millar"

D-Rays owe Huff $6.75 million for 2005, which means they would require lil bit more than Abe Alvarez

I see Papelbon taking Arroyo's slot in the rotation, and giving DiNardo the long man relief role in the pen could very well help strengthen the staff.

I can guarantee Aubrey Huff would not be a downgrade by any means...and Fred McGriff?? How old was he by the time he was moved. Huff is like 29 years old right in his prime. The guy can hit the ball hard and playing in Fenway also helps him. Not to mention he would have better guys in the lineup protecting him. The guy is a baseball player and is better than most 1B options out there. I would deffinitly take him if given the opportunity. He has always had a good OBP which the Red Sox relish.

I also have a very good feeling our pitching rotation will consist of Schilling, Wells, Clement, Arroyo, and Wakefield. That was the starting rotation we had this year and it was not good. I think we have seen just about all we can get out of Arroyo. He is what he is and thats someone who battles but doesnt have the pitches to get players out consistantly. Wells is 42 years old and clearly has lost some zip on his fastball. He is steady but not what you are looking for to solve any problems. I don't know what the hell to think about anymore with Clement. Schilling will be fine based on his determination to get back to where he was a year ago. Jonathan Papelbon has the most live arm out of everyone in the potential starting rotation. Wade Miller is a good starting pitcher who (when healthy) can dominate a lineup. If I had my way this is my rotation:

Schilling

Wakefield

Wells

Papelbon

Miller

...sending Arroyo to the pen and Clement on his way out of town

exactly i had looked up McGriff's stats, Aubrey Huff has been with the D-Rays since his career started in 2001. McGriff became a D-Ray when he was 35

1986 - 1990: Blue Jays

1991 - 1993: Padres

1993 - 1997: Braves

1998 - 2001: Devil Rays

2001 - 2002: Cubs (he actually did quite well with the cubs in 1.5 seasons belting 42 HRs and driving in 144 RBIs)

2003: Dodgers

2004: Devil Rays

either:

AJ Burnett

Matt Morris

Kevin Millwood

Jarrod Washburn

I want oulderued back at 1st. I really think it would be a bad move to aquire huff.

I want Oulderued back too

But yeah, I'd definitely be willing to watch Huff as our everyday 1st baseman with Olerud having a couple defensive appearances late in games, or giving Huff a day off every now and then. Make sure Millar doesn't come back.

I also love the flexabilaty of Huff palaying at leat two other positions.

he'll be a sight for sore eyes from what we had to see with millar giving up extra bases when he played the outfield

Six ways from Sunday, a major in improvement all the way around. Both offensively, defensively, and flexabilty. We should definately grab this guy.

I think aquiring Huff would be a great move for anybody. What he brings to the table is exactly what most teams need/want. He seems to play pretty hard, he's a very good offensive player, not a gold glover but he IS versatile, being able to play the Corners in both the Infield and the Outfield. He has not yet reached his prime, which means that there is still more to come from him. This guy would be a plus for anybody.

arent the Rockies really happy with Closser behind the plate though?

They DID boot C.J., who was pretty popular in Colorado and is a pretty good catcher to make room for Closser.

as indicated by Peter Gammons, a possible Sox/Rockies trade is looming:

Colorado Rockies would get Abe Alvarez, Kelly Shoppach, Adam Stern

Red Sox would acquire 4th outfielder Larry Bigbie and prospect 1st baseman Ryan Shealy

personally Id rather have Adam Stern over Bigbie any day as our 4th outfielder.

Posted
Is your desire to keep Stern enough to shelve the deal? I'd pull the trigger on that trade. My only concern would be losing Shoppach, but we still have 3 more years on Tek's contract to locate his replacement.
Posted
I like the deal cause I like the idea of continuing our young growing infield. He does hit the ball well and he is a righty so....just going by his stats his fielding looks good too. If he can be the real deal then that could solve 1B for years.

no doubt i like the trade, its just bigbie haha ;).

It would be a good trade to get ahold of Shealy. Todd Helton is there to stay as regular 1st baseman, which would make shealy the odd man out if he wants to be an everday starter. He had an impressive debut season at 1st base. In 36 games he batted a very very good .330 batting avg. 2 HRs, 16 RBIs. had a 1.000 fielding percentagepercentage

Posted

Yeah, Helton is under contract until 2011 (yes, you read that right 2011), so they don't have a space for Shealy. The more I look into it, the more I hope it isn't just another Gammons pipe-dream rumor. Here's what Shealy did in the PCL this year before his callup:

411 AB, 85 R, 135 H, 30 2B, 2 3B, 26 HR, 88 RBI, .328 AVG, .393 OBP, .601 SLG, .994 OPS

The PCL did seem a little light on pitching this year; that, combined with the move to a higher level means we shouldn't expect anything near this from him. But it would be an improvement over what Millar gave us.

I'd be happy with this infield:

1B Shealy

2B Pedroia/Cora

SS Rent

3B Youk
