I was just wathcing FSN's New England's sports tonight, and they had Troop on there, and he thought that they would call up Hansen, if not this weekend then mostly likely monday or tuesday. This would be a huge boost to out bullpen, we would have 2 power options in Papelbon and Hansen, this would be excellent

i think it would make more sense in the long run for them to not call Hansen up. The sooner you call him up the sooner he becomes arbitration eligible, and the sooner the Sox wil have to pay him a big dollar amount. That is if he is the real deal like everyone predicts (which I think he is)

He signed a 4 year major league deal. Arbitration doesn't factor in to this process, and besides, even if it did make him Arbitration eligble he wouldn't even come close to finishing up his 6 years to be a free agent.

Even if it were an issue, 26 to 6's idea is beyond reason. Hold up a kid with really good stuff when your BP is struggling and you have a small lead in the division in order to save a little time on the arbitration process? Talk about skewed priorities.

He got shut down already.

Sea Dogs lost tonight, so their season is over. He pictched twice in the past week and did not give up an earned run in 11 appearances at Portland. I saw him pitch and he is a stud.

yes he was shut down, was as in present tense. he has been reinstated, so obviously you really dont know anything

was as in present tense? do you mean past?

Thats right, I completely forgot he signed a Major League deal. So never mind then.

I think the argument that we should let him sit and wait is just absurd. The guy is older than many players who have helped teams win championships (see Miguel Cabrera, K-Rod) and the assumption behind letting him sit is that he may help the team win a championship in the future. WE ARE IN FIRST PLACE. THERE ARE 15 GAMES TO PLAY. If we assume that we will be in the championship hunt for years to come then we're counting chickens before they've hatched. THIS is when we need a good pitcher. If he's around next year, then great, but we need help this year and our pitching has been AWFUL. What's the worst that could happen? He could go out and throw a 6.7 ERA? Like Foulke and Schilling? If he's so mentally weak that a few bad major league starts are goign to ruin him forever then he's not going to be a great star anyway. You shouldn't need to pamper great players. He should WANT to be up there and we should want him to be up there.

If he helps us win a championship this year then that's all I could ask.

Red Sox Notebook: Pitching prospect ready for debut

BY SEAN McADAM and PAUL KENYON

Journal Sports Writer

BOSTON -- The Portland Sea Dogs' postseason came to an end last night, which means there's a very good chance that Craig Hansen's major-league career is about to begin.

The Sea Dogs lost to Akron last night, 4-1, for the Eastern League championship. Portland dropped the best-of-five series to the Aeros, three games to one, and returned to Maine last night.

The Sox want to check in today with Hansen, who did not pitch last night, and see how he's doing physically. Hansen was shut down for two weeks earlier this month with a dead arm, but has pitched for the Sea Dogs in the postseason and reported no soreness.

His fastball has regularly been 95 to 96 mph.

Boston begins a week-long road trip to Tampa Bay and Baltimore starting tomorrow, and the Sox organization likes the idea of having Hansen make his debut on the road, away from the media attention that would blanket his debut at Fenway.

Though he was not on the major-league roster before Sept. 1, Hansen could be eligible for the postseason roster if he can convince the club that's he's worthy of a spot over the final two weeks.

Or they could totally fail. We shall see.

Thats not like you! Normally you are very optimistic soxie. Well I certainly don't think there are many questions surrounding Papelbon. I've seen enough of him to know he is a big league pitcher. The question is mostly around Hansen if he will fail. If rumors are true and this kid is supposed to be as good as Houston Street....this could be exciting. Not to mention sooner or later the Sox HAVE to run into someone good for the bullpen. After countless moves and players someone has to turn out to be good....right?

i think its evident now for the rest of the season having Papelbon as the setup man and Timlin as the closer will deliver the likeness that was Timlin/Foulke had delivered last season. Adding Hansen to this duo could very well be a lights out trio

Well its official

Hansen on his way to Sox

By Michael Silverman

Monday, September 19, 2005 - Updated: 02:10 AM EST

The Red Sox bullpen is expected to receive a timely jolt of both firepower and youth as early as tonight when Craig Hansen joins the team for its series against the Devil Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Hansen, according to a source, will join the Red Sox as soon as tonight or sometime during the three-game set against the Devil Rays, arguably the best first test for the club's much hyped pitching prospect from this June's draft.

Hansen, the 21-year-old right-hander, has been the focus of intense attention since he was drafted and then signed by the club to a four-year, $4 million major league contract on July 23.

He did not disappoint once he reported. Hansen did not allow a run or a walk in two games and three innings for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox and then for Double-A Portland, he allowed no runs and just one walk and nine hits with 10 strikeouts in eight games and 9 2/3 innings.

Hansen was shut down toward the end of the Sea Dogs regular season with what the team described as a tired arm. The team's conservative approach with Hansen was for him to rest up and possibly help the Red Sox' needy bullpen.

The plan worked to everyone's satisfaction, with Hansen pitching 2 1/3 more scoreless innings during the Sea Dogs' just concluded postseason run.

The Sox have tried hard to protect Hansen, who throws a 90-plus fastball and slider, given his inexperience and the potential for a Cla Meredith-type experience.

Meredith, a 2004 draft pick, gave up seven runs in three appearances in May.

It'll be interesting to see the battle for the final spot on the playoff roster. I think we can agree the following 8 are definite: Wakefield, Wells, Clement, Schilling, Arroyo, Timlin, Myers, and Papelbon, with Bradford the probable 9th. That would leave Foulke, Delcarmen, Hansen, and the rest of the pen fighting for the last spot, assuming we take 10 pitchers into the 1st series.

I think H. ramirez will be called up too....

I want to see Foulke on the roster, I really do.

I hope Hansen does well. Unlike Cla, eek, that was awful.

Hansen will DEFINANTLY be more sucessfull then Cla Meredith because he is the type of pitcher that gets people out based on his stuff alone. Cla relys on movement and catching the corners which without experience is hard to do well in the bigs. Hansen has a 95 MPH fastball and a nasty slider so he can get away with being inexperienced, period. Hansen will be better then Cla, but I dont know exactly how good he will be.
