Giambi has been more of an MVP than Arod has for the Yankees. Arod does not come through in the clutch, Giambi does, and right now Giambi has regained his stature as one of the most feared hitters in baseball. While I respect Arod as one of the best to ever play the game, a lot of his stats come from blowout games and don't really decide whether or not the Yankees win the game or not.

That doesn't make you an MVP. If Ortiz is suddenly elimated from the Red Sox, the Red Sox wouldn't suffer nearly as much as the Yankees did, if A-Rod was elimated. The Red Sox have a much better lineup. It's stacked with excellent hitters down the lineups, Olerud, and Petagine could do a servicable job for Ortiz if he was gone. If the Yankees lost A-Rod, they lose 41 HR's, and a good glove. Then you have to ask yourself the question, who replaces A-Rod? Escalona? Phillips? None of them are even close to the calibar of Petagine and Olerud, and that's not saying a whole lot. While Ortiz certainly is extremly valuble, it's hard to argue against A-Rod, who has better numbers, and is carrying a team offensively.

If the Yanks lost A-Rod they'd find someone good to replace him. Someone capable of providing the same glove in the field, possibly someone with a similarly high OBP (perhaps .375) and some power. It wouldn't be too hard to find good quality players who could make the team of Jeter, Sheffield, Matsui and Giambi score tons and tons of runs. A-Rod is and was superfluous on this Yankees team... they don't need that power. They have Jeter (Hall of Famer). They have Giambi (MVP a few years ago). They have Sheffield (consistent 100+ RBI man). They have Matsui (Japanese Babe Ruth). What else do you need? Well, sometimes you need someone who can carry a team on his own back and come up with the hits when it matters. I think you're crazy to say that the Sox could replace Ortiz easily... he's not just an average hitter. I don't know if you can quantify it precisely through OPS or HR or RBI but anyone who has watched the sox play much this year knows that he's a HUGE reason for their success.

Basically, the argument that a DH shouldn't win it is silly. Sure, A-rod is more valuable in the field. Of course he is, its infinity to zero in that category. However, Bill Mueller is also infinity times better than Ortiz in the field, as is Manny. A-Rod is a good fielder, but he's not an irreplacably good fielder. I would be just as happy with Mueller at 3rd defensively. THe argument progresses though, to say that A-rod has saved a fielding position to have a really good DH in the game. Well, the Yankees haven't used that DH spot to make the position worthwhile. Ruben? Tino? c'mon. Having a good fielder who is also a good hitter does not seem to be more valuable to the Yankees as a team than having a good fielding decent hitter (Mueller) at third and an excellent hitting DH.

Sorry, I just don't by it that DH's can't be most valuable players.

Ortiz actually has better numbers, 1 more homerun, like 20 more rbi's, the batting average is like 15 points different ortiz is so clutch, he is the MVP

Ortiz 297-42-130

Arod-321-41-111(coming into tonight) 20

True, but wouldn't the Red Sox as well?

Balance at the bottom of the order. Sheffield's getting older, Matsui's in his walk year, Jeter's a leadoff hitter. Besides none of these guys are even in the league as A-Rod is.

You misconstrued what I said. I said that the Olerud and Petagine, are better options then Escolana, and Phillips. You're the one who said that A-Rod could be replaced. Neither player is replaceable.

You're absoulety correct that Mueller is a great fielder, he's better than A-Rod (statsically). But offensively the two don't match up. I don't really see your point, could you elabrate a little more? Great points, by the way.

ah well Yanks win, but hey now just 17 games left with a 2.5 game lead. I will be at tomorrow night's game ;) Schil against the A's, return of Johnny Damon, give a deserved standing ovation to Jay Payton, I was a fan of his the short time he was with the Sox

Give a standing O to Payton? I'd rather throw stuff at him. He's here for two months, and unlike Cabrera did not make enough of a positive impact worthy of applause. He cried about his playing time, maybe somewhat justified, and forced the Sox to trade him. Think we could use him now with Damon and Kapler hurting? He deserves to be booed, I will never applaud that guy.

I was a fan of Payton's ability but I wouldn't applaud him for the simple fact that he embarassed his manager as his way to get out of town. I understand his frustration and all but I just don't respect the way he went about doing it

and I just wanted to vent about how pissed off that every media outlet is making it seem like Gabe Kapler injured himself during a regular home run trot. The guy was running hard thinking the liner was gonna go off the wall rather than out of the park. The jackass commentator on TSN, who was showing the game here in Canada, said it was something that would wind up on a blooper reel.
