Athletics aim to back up blowout

New York (75-59) at Oakland (76-58), 4:05 p.m. ET

For the first time this season, Kirk Saarloos will pitch on four days' rest when he takes the mound against the Yankees on Saturday afternoon at McAfee Coliseum. It could be a good thing, as the righty is peaking right now. He has a 4-0 record and a 3.65 ERA in his last six starts. Saarloos is also 8-2 with a 3.53 ERA in his last 13 starts. A win would match Saarloos' career high of five consecutive wins, accomplished for the first time July 20-Aug. 10, 2002.

Pitching matchup

NYY: RHP Aaron Small

• 5-0, 3.03 ERA in 2005

• Has not faced OAK in 2005

OAK: RHP Kirk Saarloos

• 9-6, 3.98 ERA in 2005

• Has not faced NYY in 2005

Player to watch

Since the All-Star break, Jay Payton has amassed 13 home runs and 37 RBIs, ranking him in the top five in each category in the American League. The outfielder added one home run and two RBIs to those totals on Friday.

Quick hits

The six runs Oakland scored in the first inning on Friday were the most allowed by New York in the first frame since the Devil Rays scored that many against them on May 3. ... The A's are 26-15 in games started by an opposing left-hander. ... Oakland won its 40th home game on Friday. ... Prior to Friday's 12-0 rout, the A's had not shut out the Yankees and scored 11 or more runs since July 24, 1970.

It sucks that 5 of these runs are coming after a marginal 3-2 called ball on Sheff with 2-outs. The ump was about 3/4 into his strikeout motion but looked like he changed his mind.

for steroid users

You really think he would take steroids still? BTW, I thought Small was going to get shelled according to you? :o ;)

eh. Only losers blame refs/umps, believe me, my sports teams in other sports have been screwed over by bad calls, but that's life. :dunno:

of course I think he still takes steroids, why wouldn't I?

I'll say what was posted on another MB

First 3 months of 2005 -5 HR.

July HR- 14. Ties all time Yankee record.

He has also gained weight and looks like he did when he was on steroids.

The circumstancial evidence points to him being back on steroids or something similar. That worked for him before, it makes logical sense that he went back to it.

I can understand someone raising their average, and their OBP steadily during a season, but no one suddely regains all their power, from 2 years ago, from the 31st of 1 month to the 1st of the next. Just doesn't happen without steroids.

If he's bigger now than he was at the beginning of the season -- it's steroids. It has to be. You can't add muscle during the season and still manage to have the energy to hit 14 out in a month. The regular season is about mantaining muscle and I don't care how dedicated you are, you can not add muscle during the regular season....you play a game every single day....what do you think he does ...wakes up, works out, goes to the stadium, works out, batting practice, plays game, works out....i doubt it

Baseball is a game of numbers. Look at them. There is no way that this can take place unless that player used steroids. Show me one other instance of any player having this big of a spike in their power numbers (not coming back from an injury), and I'll never say that he's on steroids again.

just because one of your beloved yankees takes them, does that make them a fashion statment, and everybody should do it.

as for steroids- it increases your bat speed and power, as evidenced by gee-I'm-big's 14 HR's in July.

The way things are going it looks as if Small will be a number 3 starter for the rest of the season. Not that I mind.

Small has been great. I was a bit pissed that they took him out of the roation. He hasnt lost a game for us yet and hes pitched great in every start.

He threw 80 pitches in 7 innings. :o He could have like 10 complete games if he pitched like this for a whole season.

If you are calling me a loser, then f*** you. I know all about taking the good with the bad when it comes to officiating. I just hate to see crucial parts of any game depend on someone's judgement. Might as well be figure skating.

So you don't think he would have tested positive for steroids? I disagree with you there, but he might still take HGH I think because that hasnt been banned.
