Yankees could pursue Ponson

September 2

New York Post(registration required):

"GM Brian Cashman said it was too early in the process to formulate an opinion whether the Yankees would be interested in Sidney Ponson, who was released by the Orioles yesterday."

Why would anyone go after this guy. He's horrible and should just retire. Anyone with a mind wouldn't want this guy.

just because the unreliable New York Post says so doesnt mean its true. And besides, if they are it doesnt mean that they are serious about it, im sure tons of teams have entertained the idea, most teams entertain most FA players. But it just would absolutely make no sense, there is nobody that deserves to be taken off the 40 man roster to make room for this guy

Ponson sucks and I don't want him. Johnson, Mussina, Wright, Chacon, Leiter, Wang and Small will take care of starting duties the rest of the season.

he might

Who cares, he sucks.

I hope he comes back. He'll get bombed so badly, that they'll have to throw him in the psych ward, when he starts seeing David Ortiz in his mind.

You really expect a rookie, who isn't a strikeout pitcher, and just had shoulder surgery, to come back and actually pitch well? Man, and I thought Enron was a good choice for something to rebound.

I don't know if this was mentioned but Ponson isn't available for the postseason since he wouldn't be on the roster by Aug. 1 so if the Yankees sign him it would be merely to help them get in the playoffs.

man you are absolutely crazy if you think he sucks, hes been marvelous this year before he went down...I would take him over Arroyo, Miller, and Wakefield.

Take it easy on the sarcasm and hyperbole there.

The kid is poised, he doesn't pitch like a 'rookie'. Remincent of Pettitte back when he came up. It's better that he isn't a strikeout pitcher, because he'll know how to get hitters out. Coming off the DL, I'd take a Greg Maddux type (a smart pitcher with average stuff) over a Kerry Wood (lights out stuff, no real thought process). Wang doesn't overpower hitters, but does a damn good job in getting them out.

The injury Wang has had is not as bad as you would think. I have heard that Pedro has pitched with the same injury all season, it is just a matter of handling it. Wang didn't know he was hurt until he got looked at, he had thrown I believe 7 solid innings against the Tigers before going on the shelf.

Wang is capable of coming back and bolstering this staff. I would be vey confident going into the playoffs with Johnson, Mussina, Wang and Chacon. In my mind, the jury is still out on Jaret Wright, but if he proves healthy and dominant down the stretch, Chacon can also be a huge help to the bullpen, slotting Jaret in the 4th slot.

I'm not sure, but I believe you can scratch Mussina off that list, with the tendinitis and all...

a ROD2212 "yourvery confident going into the playoffs"...

given that your team at the moment wouldnt be in the playoffs, dont you think that is tad presumptious?

I don't believe it will sideline him for the entire season.

Not at all. The Yankees have the best team out of the contenders for the WC and are a whole 1 game out. Not insurmountable. 'A little presumptuous' would be a fan of Minnesota, who is fading and far back.

even if he gets back he wont be at his best, i dont see him being a factor at the end

as far as the WC goes i think the A'S sent a message lastnight that they are as well top contenders for the WC

hahaha, yes by beating up on our ace Al Leiter and shutting out our AA team for half the game.

I'm shaking in my boots.

and you guys have never been knocked around??

If one blowout game determines the entire season then baseball would be a very boring and unenjoyable sport.
