The San Francisco Giants traded outfielder Michael Tucker to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday for minor league right-hander Kelvin Pichardo.

CF Ken Griffey wasn't the only player the Reds declined to trade before the August 31 deadline for setting postseason rosters. The Nationals made a late run at RHP Ramon Ortiz, but the Reds resisted, apparently because they were reluctant to disrupt their recent revival. Mets RHP Steve Trachsel and Cubs 2B Todd Walker, two players who drew trade interest before the August 31 deadline, could be in even greater demand this offseason. Each has a reasonable $2.5 million club option for 2006. Trachsel, however, will gain full no-trade protection as a player with 10 years of service, five with the same club, at the end of this season. His main priority is to start. With the Red Sox most likely be trying to move Manny to the Mets this offseason, Traschel/Many trade deal could be a viable option for both teams, Mets getting a great bat while Sox get a quality pitcher in return.

Though Rick Thurman, the agent for Padres closer RHP Trevor Hoffman, says, "Trevor's gotten to the point where he's very realistic about possibly not being in San Diego," Padres G.M. Kevin Towers responds, "My sense is we'll get something done." Towers cleared the air last week with Hoffman after the pitcher, a potential free agent, questioned the club's intentions in an interview with Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Hoffy knows how much we value him--he is priority No. 1 once the season is over," Towers says.

OF Franklin Gutierrez and RHP Andrew Brown, the two players the Guardians acquired from the Dodgers for CF Milton Bradley last season, joined Cleveland as September call-ups. Gutierrez, 22, should be no less than a fourth outfielder and could become an impact player if his offense improves enough to match his defense. Brown, 24, became a reliever this season and posted excellent numbers at Class AAA Buffalo; he could figure into the Guardians' bullpen plans next season.

Armed with financial flexibility, look for the Blue Jays to get creative this offseason. They offered CF Vernon Wells for Rangers 1B Mark Teixeira in July, and they're open to trading anyone on their roster except RHP Roy Halladay. Rival clubs like several of the Jays' young players, including RHPs Dustin McGowan and Brandon League. Jays C Gregg Zaun says of McGowan, "If he gets fastball command, he's Curt Schilling." An executive with one N.L. contender says the Phillies would be a difficult postseason opponent in their home run haven, Citizens Bank Park. "It's like going to play in Colorado--the game is not the same," the exec says. "You lose games on popups that make it into the seats. It puts additional pressure on your pitching. Above-average pitching becomes average. Average pitching becomes below average. You feel vulnerable."

1B Lyle Overbay is the Brewer most likely to be traded this winter, but the team almost certainly will receive inquiries about LF Carlos Lee. The Brewers plan to exercise Lee's $8.5 million option for 2006 and will try to sign him long term. But remember, G.M. Doug Melvin traded 1B Richie Sexson when Sexson was in the same position as Lee--one year away from free-agent eligibility--after the 2003 season.

I HATED Walker, bring back Pokey! I loved Pokey, plus that would be an ill middle infield. Renteria and Pokey.

POKEY FOR PRESIDENT!

Everyone loved Pokey. I got to watch him play for the Pirates too, and I was sad to see him go from both teams.
