"By 6 p.m., the event had topped last year's total. Phone lines were to until midnight. Dozens of celebrities called in, including both Kerry and fellow U.S. Sen. Edward M.Kennedy; Clemens, the Houston pitcher who made frequent visits to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute while with the Red Sox; and Steinbrenner, the New York Yankees owner who has helped out each of the telethon's three years."

even I have to admit that george and roger deserve a tip of my redsox hat.

very classy, respectful and cool, that they would do this for the jimmy fund.

I think that is great..

good job george, roger and every one else...

Yeah I heard Steinbrenner call in during the small portion of the telethon that I watched. He didn't really say much but it's good of him to donate.

He's ok. I've never seen him trash the sox and people hate him cause hes the owner of the yanks. He's not all bad.

Oh he's trashed the Sox several times before. During the Evil Empire sagas he ripped Henry and Lucchino to shreds. I'm sure he also did the same to previous management but that is a little too far from my off the field baseball memory. But when he was in his golden age he trashed everyone.

Doesn't surprise me. The Boss isn't a bad guy, the fans love him, and I remember one time the fans started cheering for him during an interview and he got all choked up and I saw some tears. Nice guy over-all, doesn't deserve to be the most hated person in all of sports.

Well considering Henry dubbed his team "Evil Empire" I don't blame stein for being a little mad.

I don't blame him at all, just don't make him out to be a guy who's only trashed on because he's associated with the Yanks.

He seems to call in every year. He gets trashed a lot by us, but I'll continue to give him credit for donating. It days like yesterday and today that make me proud to be a Sox fan. 52 years now.... that's incredible. Also seeing that younger kid in the wheelchair sing "take me out to the ball game" last night, I almost broke down and cried right then. Thanks to groups like the Jimmy Fund, one day cancer will have a cure and life will be a lot easier for millions of Americans.

[edit: the last three years he's called in -- I missed that. Thanks George.]

The Yankees also made a $1 million donation to the tsunami relief fund, so I guess for all that money that goes into the payroll, they do dab it here-and-there on other stuff. There. :)
