That would be a great signing IMO. The Yanks have enough bats, so his BA doesn't worry me. He brings some youth (compared to Bernie at least) and some much needed D. Nice move by Cash.

At the trade deadline, a ton of people were saying that now that the Cubs finally had a centerfielder they would make the playoffs.

I'm not sure exactly who you guys think Matt Lawton is, but a guy who is going to help with defense he is not. He missed possibly the most popups in the history of baseball during his time with the Pirates. Turned tons of sure outs into doubles, and made his fair share of bonehead plays. Don't let the fact that he only has 2 errors fool you ... most of his errors are mental ... or because he chooses not to hustle. Just look at his Assists, 4, for a guy who played RF the first half of the season in a field that is extremely short to right is pathetic. This may be an upgrade for the Yankees, but certainly not a big one.

 

I also don't really see adding a guy who is 34 as an upgrade in the age department. I think I'd take a 50 year old bernie williams over a 34 year old Matt Lawton.

Lawton is capable of playing CF but hasn't done it often, would they move Matsui to CF for good and Lawton in left or right? Odd. Lawton won't exactly push them over the top either..

 

Not sure how much that improves their defense.

I don't see how it hurts. If he's taking plate appearances away from Tony Womack, it's definitely a good thing. Scott Proctor was sent down to make room for Lawton.
