The problem is, he doesn't know how to deal with African-American people," Bradley said. "I think that's what's causing everything. It's a pattern of things that have been said -- things said off the cuff that I don't interpret as funny. It may be funny to him, but it's not funny to Milton Bradley. But I don't take offense to that because we all joke about race in here. Race is an issue with everything we do in here.

Trouble continues to envelope this guy. I wish he would just be a baseball player - he's a good one.

As for critiquing leaderhip, he should also understand that if some one has to tell you you are a leader, you are not much of a leader . . .

Bradley accuses Kent of racism, lack of leadership

August 24, 2005

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Milton Bradley and Jeff Kent are still at odds. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Jim Tracy and general manager Paul DePodesta wish they weren't -- especially now that Bradley has injected race into the equation. Bradley accused Kent of a lack of leadership and an inability to deal with black players in a 15-minute session with reporters at his locker before Tuesday night's 8-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The remarks came only a couple of minutes after he said that the feud between the two that became public last weekend in Florida was a "dead issue.''

"The problem is, he doesn't know how to deal with African-American people,'' Bradley said. "Me being an African-American is the most important thing to me -- more important than baseball,'' said the 27-year-old center fielder, whose voice never went beyond his normal speaking level. "White people never want to see race -- with anything. But there's race involved in baseball. That's why there's less than 9 percent African-American representation in the game. I'm one of the few African-Americans that starts here.''

Bradley did not like what Kent said to him after he failed to score from first base on a double in Saturday's victory over the Florida Marlins. Bradley initiated a 25-minute closed-door meeting with Tracy after that game. "I was told in spring training I was the team leader -- by Paul DePodesta. By Jim Tracy. By (team owner) Frank McCourt,'' Bradley said. "Growing up in L.A., I know how to deal with all types of people, and I do it on an everyday basis. But some people don't deal with all different types of people every day, and therefore don't know how to handle situations when they arise.'' DePodesta issued a statement after Tuesday's game, saying: "Everyone at the Los Angeles Dodgers is committed to winning. It has been a frustrating season for all of us and our fans, as we have dealt with plenty of adversity.

"We have a talented team of passionate players who take their performance -- as well as the team's performance -- personally. Under the circumstances, it is not unusual for players' emotions to run high. However, if and when any issue arises that runs contrary to the goals and values of the organization, there should be no question that we address it.'' Kent hadn't yet arrived at his locker when Bradley began his criticism of him, but Bradley accused the media of coming to his locker first Tuesday because of who he is, and the baggage that follows him around -- including the anger management classes the Dodgers required Bradley to take after several outbursts last season.

"At no time am I going to let somebody question my hustle, my injury or question my motivation for playing,'' Bradley said. "I watch him on the field, and I follow in his footsteps and the things he does on the field. As far as off the field, he has no clue about leadership. "If you're going to be the leader of the team, then you need to mingle with the team and associate with the team. I mean, you can't have your locker in the corner, put your headphones on and sit in the corner reading a motocross magazine. He's in his own world. Everybody else is in this world.''

Bradley, who tweaked his sore left knee while trying to beat out a double play grounder in Monday's loss at Florida, was a late scratch Tuesday because of irritation in the patella tendon. Kent, a former NL MVP who feuded with Barry Bonds in San Francisco, defended himself following Bradley's accusations. "He can go ahead and say those types of things, and it comes from an incident that he still doesn't get. And that's a shame,'' Kent said. "If you think that I've got a problem with African-Americans, then go talk to Dusty Baker. Go talk to Dave Winfield, who took me under his wing. Go talk to Joe Carter -- all the guys that I idolized in this game and all the veteran players who taught me how to play this game. "That's a shame, and I take offense to that. That's just absolutely pathetic if it comes from his mouth. I will not get into this anymore, and that's all I've got to say.''

Kent always had a redneck look to him. hell even his name sounds redneck. lol.

But honestly, nither of them seem smart at this moment.

So does that Kent statement mean that you're convicting him of being a racist because of the way he looks? Because that is racism. "Redneck" is a racist statement.

Bradley said something about there being racism in the clubhouse and it just being a "baseball thing". Well Milton racism isn't a one way street. There are racists all over this country, and the biggest misconseption is that they're all white. If there is racism in the clubhouse I'm sure it goes both ways. I'm really get tired of the race card being thrown out. It's really time for people like Milton Bradley to grow up and realize that the world is not out to get the black man.

Now, if Kent did make a racist comment then you go to the manager and talk to them about it. You don't go on TV and cry to reporters about it. It's as unproffesional as Kent, supposidly, making racist comments.

Sorry if I went off the deep end a little there but I'm so fed up with the race card being played.

BTW, I'm not taking either of their sides because I have no idea what really happened.

I have to imagine there is probablyt racism somewhere in baseball but Milton Bradley is not a credible source as far a racism goes. In Miltons world every white person is against black people and vice versa. He thinks everybody's against everyone. If I'm not mistaken I believe he called a black reporter from the LA Times a "Uncle Tom" for some absurd reason, so the guy is all about race.

Now on the other hand in Jeff Kent's world, he's a .377 hitter and the most important player in baseball. All other players in his club house? Not Important, it's all about him. I'm sutre he did say sometihng stupid, but probably not naytihng to do with race.

As I said before they are both stupid and should be blown off the face of the Earth.

I just want Bradley to shut up.

Me too. I voted Kent. If it wasn't for Bradley talking to the media about this we wouldn't have this thread. Act like a man, sort it out with Kent, not through the media.

Im not going to comment because stuff probably happened that no one knows about, and its pretty much impossible to take sides.

That is a very good point. I don't think we can get the truth from either of these two.

Kent may be a red neck.

When asked by a reporter if he was OK, Bradley replied, "I'm always OK. As long as I'm black, I'm fine."

Somebody, please try to defend this comment. If Kent came out and said "as long as I'm white, I'm fine" he'd be fined, suspended and thrown in Guantanamo Bay. I hate selective equality and double standards when it come to 'racism'.

Bradley is an idiot, plain and simple. Kent may be too, but it is blatantly obvious Milt needs to do the same thing Terrell Owens does, shut the hell up and play ball.

There's a fine line with race issues. For one thing, if two people of the same race crack jokes about their race, maybe even use a slur, it might considered "ok"; however, if someone of another race says that, it's racism. It's just one of the unspoken rules of society, I guess. And one that perhaps Kent tread, unknowingly, and Bradley instead of addressing it privately (or maybe he did, I don't know), blabbered to the media.

More often than not, however, the "racism cry" is taken far out of context.

There's a double standard, white's are assumed to be smart enough not to say hostile and insensitive things, when they do they are labled racist. Paternalistic, liberal whites assume Blacks are not smart enough or thoughtful to understand the consequences or ultimate meanings of their words and actions, so they are patronized.

I agree. Another example would be BET ... if you tried to put White Entertainment Television on the air you'd be thrown in jail and labeled a racist.

There's a huge double standard in that.

Put it this way, a black man calls a white man "cracker" or "whitey" jokingly or not does anyone care? No. Now if a white man calls a black man "niggger" or "negro" wether he is joking or not does anyone care? Hell yes. There would be a torch and ptichform mob outside his house in a few hours.

I know. I was just stating an unwritten, cultural agreement, if you will. I never said it was right, on either side. Some black people (sometimes it looks like a minority) take issue with the "n" word being used, by whoever. Not that I condone "white people hating", but "negro" carries a very negative connotation that's on a different level. "Negroid" was a word that 19th and 20th century anthropologists used to refer to a race of people in Africa; today that word is widely considered offensive.

Well, I know Bradley goes after fans but when did he start using steroids?

Huh? He doesn't take steroids, thats all speculation. Going after the fans? The fan swiped at him and he did was hit them back a little bit. Not going after fans.

I don't understand the bradley to sheffield comparison.
