Red Sox try to halt Royals

Boston (71-51) at Kansas City (40-82), Tuesday, 8:10 p.m. ET

For a while, it looked as if the Red Sox were going to arrive in Kansas City with the home team in the midst of a most infamous streak. However, the plot line has changed.

Now, the Red Sox begin a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday trying to snap the Royals' two-game winning streak. The Royals had lost 19 in a row before snapping out of it.

The Red Sox are also trying to finish this season-high, 10-game road trip with a winning record. After splitting the four-game series at Anaheim, the Sox are 3-4.

Veteran left-hander David Wells will open the series for Boston. Wells is 15-3 lifetime against the Royals.

Pitching matchup

BOS: LHP David Wells

• 9-6, 4.70 ERA in 2005

• 1-0, 0.00 ERA vs. KC in 2004

KC: RHP Zack Greinke

• 3-14, 6.02 ERA in 2005

• Did not face BOS in 2004

Player to watch

Shortstop Edgar Renteria, who ended his home run drought one at-bat shy of 200 on Sunday, has been swinging the bat well of late.

Quotable

"Well, I think what it is something we felt for him, for us, was the best thing to do. Not only did we appreciate him doing it. I think it sped up his process for being an effective pitcher. There's been some inconsistencies. We've sat down and thought about what's right for a long time. I think in our club's best interest, I think this is the best time to do this." -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona, on Curt Schilling's move from the bullpen back to the rotation

Quick hits

The Red Sox are 21-9 in their last 30 games. ... Bill Mueller is hitting .392 over his last 15 starts, and .458 on this road trip. ... Johnny Damon's streak of having at least a hit or a run ended at 58 straight games on Sunday. ... John Olerud has six hits in 14 at-bats since coming off the disabled list.
