This was always a topic that intrigued me very much. The idea of this trade in '49, when DiMag was at the end of his career, and Williams coming into the prime of his could have been one of the best deals in Yankee history. Though it would have been nice to have Ted in pinstripes, im glad we stuck with DiMaggio (who happens to be my favorite Yankee of all time) and also glad that we didnt make the trade because I have heard rumor that Yogi Berra would have been involved in that deal.

Phil Pepe wrote an article for YESNetwork.com concerning this subject, and he also talks about the offer the Yankees made to Ted Williams after he retired to come out of retirement to join the 1961 team as a Pinch Hitter (left was filled between Yogi, Ellie, and Jonny Blanchard). He obviouly declined, but it would have been something to see Teddy Ballgame in pinstripes on that magnificant 1961 Yankees Team. (wonder who would have worn 9, Maris or Williams  )

Well anyways, HERE is the link.

Maybe if they were both in thier primes it would have made sense. People have always said if those two had been on the other team thier offensive numbers would have been so much better. Each was tailor made to play in the others park. Funny how life works that way sometimes.
